A certain minority among Usenet users -- including, apparently, the "are
you sure you're not from AOL" commenter -- seem to think it's funny or
trenchant or cool to use AOL members as props in their humor. Another,
probably overlapping minority, seem to have reached conclusions about all
AOL members based on the behavior of a few, and then proceed to tar them
all with the same brush.

This is indeed bigotry. People being made to feel unwelcome in a place
that's supposed to be open to all, simply on account of appearance (in
this case, the appearance of their email address).

I don't go out of my way to seek it out, but when I see it in a newsgroup
in which I actively participate, to which I make useful contributions, I
absolutely will point it out for what it is. If you don't think it's an
issue, fine. I'm sure you feel the same way about posts that say "you must
be an asshole, you're from England."

This AOL-slamming has been going on for too long, and I'm sick of it.
