It took me a while to figure out, so I'm not surprised
that you are having problems as well. On the map is a
crevice close to the eight mirrors. Fly over the end of
the crevice closest to the mirros, and you sohuld trigger
a trap. I forget what tries to fry you, but if you go back there
is a new mirror there that takes you inside the squares.
The spell is in one of the squares (I forget which one, try them
all).

As for saving in progress, I am playing the Magic Carpet
Plus CD which has the original game and the hidden worlds.
The documentation says that if you play the hidden worlds
you can hit <ALT>s to save your game (only 1 save game
available), and <ALT>l to load it. It said that this
won't work on the original levels, but it is for me. So,
if you have the Plus CD, try it out.

Don't ask me for higher levels, I'm only at 23.
