For those who missed the past threads on this topic:

You _must_ have the CD in the drive to play the background mission
music. These are on 27 audio tracks (like your stereo CD plays).
Also, there are shell graphics not installed even on the full install.
So, even if you disable sound, you still need the CD to enter the
shell.
