Thank you for any responses in advance. : Well, no program can run DOS programs in any other way. : OS/2 requires a DOS shell too. : Why doesn't anyone hassle OS/2 - it doesn't support all DOS programs though. : You have to boot from a floppy to run DOOM from OS/2 - how sad : Windows 95 can run DOOM in a DOS windows from within the GUI. : By the way, DOS 7 is Windows 95 as well : Glenn Stewart Arrgh! Not only are we rehashing the question of "Is Windows 3.1 a operating system" but we have bad information about OS/2 to boot! Shulman (author of "Unauthorized Windows") says that Windows 95 is just Windows-386 plus DOS 7.0. In fact, Novell DOS 7.0 already has 32 bit drivers as do memory management packages such as Netroom. So, you could take MS-DOS 5.0, add Netroom, and add a pretty new (but not pretty good) GUI shell, add a further munging of the overextended FAT file system.. AND.. you have Windows-95. YOU decide if that is a whole new 32 bit operating system.. As for OS/2, THERE IS NO DOS SHIPPED WITHIN ANY OS/2 PACKAGE NOR DOES OS/2 RUN OVER DOS! The command syntax of a OS/2 shell session is pretty much identical to MS-DOS 5.0 with some commands missing (like MEM) and new commands added (like START). It is not DOS. "START" incedently allows you to start another process which runs independently of your current OS/2 session (e.g. START CHECKDSK /F E:). This is how your multitask under OS/2 without the WPS (Work Place Shell). When your run a DOS session from OS/2, you are still not running DOS. You are running an OS/2 session with added drivers which cause it to emulate a DOS real mode session. This emulation is so good that I have only found 1 program (FXLINK from DOS 6.0) not able to run in this emulated DOS session. If you want to get really down and dirty you can run a real mode DOS session in a window by placing a bootable DOS disk in drive A: and clicking on the "Boot from Drive A:" icon. If you like the results, you can make a hard disk image of a bootable disk, and boot from that disk image. DOS programs which won't run in a emulated OS/2 DOS session will run in a real DOS session. Oh yes.. I can run DOOM (with the internal speaker) from OS/2 just fine. If I want the sound, I just "dual boot" or "multi boot" to my DOS 5.0 partition and run it there. Just like Windows-95 and it's "single application mode". Of course all my WORK applications under DOS and Windows DO work under OS/2 and they work better there, than they do under DOS and memory is never a problem.. Launching Windows under OS/2 currently reports 98 Meg of RAM free! P.S. Check out the current Computer Shopper Tech Section! Hope this clears up things for you. +------------------------------------------------------------------+--------+ |To SAFELY preview Windows-95 and OS/2 without leaving your Windows|"archie"| |try "WorkPlace Shell for Windows" Program Manager replacement. | 4 other| |Now at ftp://ftp.cica.indiana.edu/pub/pc/win3/uploads/wpsfw150.zip| sites | +------------------------------------------------------------------+--------+ |My tagline is my own and is not shared by my employers nor any other agency| | Jim Brumbaugh .<|>.
