I think you should question your knowledge of Windows 95. You most
certainly can run DOS4GW games under Windows 95... in fact, I have had
FAR more luck running a game within Windows 95 compared to when I was
running OS/2. To tell you the truth, this wouldn't affect my decision
to run OS/2 anyway since I prefer to run my games from pure DOS.
Which brings us to the second point... booting to DOS was a feature
available since the earliest betas of Windows 95. You could choose
to boot your old original version of DOS or you could choose to bootup
DOS v7.0. I used to maintain a copy of DOS v6.2 along side Windows 95
but I stopped doing so... I've had absolutely zero incompatibilities
from DOS v7.0 (ignoring the LOCK feature which prevents older programs
from messing up the long filename system... I'm not too fond of the
way they implemented this).

I've played tons of titles under DOS v7.0... X-Wing, Doom, Descent,
Dark Forces, Wing Commander III, Hi Octane, Magic Carpet, Under a Killing
Moon... blah blah blah. Actually, most of the above ran from a DOS
window (though not necessarily IN a window).
