You have to keep in mind that there was only one person working on the
port, and really, it isn't IBM's responsibility anyway. DOOM *DID*
run under OS/2, but Id changed it and now it doesn't. Starting with
version 1.2, Doom requires direct access to the hardware (ie sound
card), which means that it won't run under OS/2 or WinNT. I might
add, that it is a good thing not to let programs access the hardware,
that is why OS/2 and NT isn't affected by viruses and helps out its
crash protection quite a bit. Id made the change, and for no apparant
reason. What I find interesting is that Id went out of their way for
a Linux port of Doom, and turned around and screwed the OS/2 market.
My solution, make another DOS setting, something like "Allow direct
access to sound card". Which should always be off, unless you run
Doom. Kind of crazy to make a change for just one program, though.

>From what I have seen, at least on the technical end, Win95 is nothing
new. It isn't better than OS/2. Still have a 64K heap space, 640K
conventional memory barrier (come on, is it that hard to implement a
flat memory module?), FAT filesystem, etc. Win95 is DOS and Windows
revamped, with a pretty, easy to use, interface. For most users, it
is great, but for people who need more, it doesn't cut it. I for one,
run more than 10 things at a time quite often, and Win95's limit to 8
programs (that damn 64K heap) get's on my nerves. Also, I can't have
any of them crash, and after one week of the Win95 beta, I will stick
with OS/2 or WinNT. Both offer what I need and both are FAR superior
to Win95.
