Gary Crowley has enjoyed a close relationship with Oasis since 1994,
interviewing the band numerous times. Here, he talks exclusively to
Noel Gallagher about the future of the supergroup:

Noel Gallagher once commented that his band (who were, at that time,
riding on the crest of a phenomenally successful wave) would make just
three studio albums before calling it quits. Last month heathen
Chemistry, the fifth Oasis album to feature original material, was
released. A change of heart occurred somewhere along the lines.

'Fucking hell, if you take ninety-percent of the shit I talk
literally, you wouldn't even recognise the band anymore! At that point
in time - I think it was just after Morning Glory came out - I was
just arsing around with everything I said in interviews. Although, if
I'm totally honest, I guess I probably did feel that way at one point.
I just happened to change my mind, like I always do!'

Heathen Chemistry has received positive reviews. Or rather, positive
when compared to the reception Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants
received when it was thrust upon a tired, post-millennium public in
2000. The feedback from the public has also been more encouraging.
Oasis has attempted to get back some of the spirit that made its first
two albums so loved, and it seems the boys have succeeded.

One of the biggest reminders of this fact is Noel Gallagher's
insistence on returning to the studio as soon as possible, to begin
work on the band's next magnum opus.

'When we made Definitely Maybe we were young, energetic, we didn't
give a fuck about anything other than the music. Sure, there were the
drugs and booze and parties, and all that other stuff that came with
our initial success. But we weren't a fucking tabloid soap-opera back
then. We were about the music first and foremost, which is why we got
our arses straight back into the studio after we'd finished touring
the first album. We had something going and we wanted to keep it
going. Then we made Morning Glory in two months and said 'there you
fucking go, have some of this.' We were on a role and we had the
passion and enthusiasm to keep it going. Then we became celebrities
and, even worse, we started acting like celebrities. That's when it
all went down the shit house and we lost our passion.

'Now we've got Andy and Gem on board, and we've made what I feel is a
good album, I've got that spark back, we all have. We just want to
finish this tour and then get back into the studio and knock another
album out. It's time to stop behaving like celebrities and start doing
the thing we were meant to do, which is make music.'

In fact, Noel Gallagher and his disciples are so passionate about
their music once more, they couldn't even wait until Heathen Chemistry
had been completed before they set to work on the sixth chapter of the
Oasis saga.

'People have been asking me for months and months about why it took us
so long to finish Heathen chemistry. So far I've just told people it's
all down to our kid. That's what I've always thought, 'when in doubt,
blame that cunt.' So I just told everyone Liam couldn't be arsed to
finish the vocals. In fact the reason it took so long is because we
recorded a bunch more songs that don't even feature on this album. At
the time we didn't know they wouldn't be on the record, we just had a
bunch of songs and we wanted to get them recorded and see which ones
fitted together the best. Those eleven tracks on Heathen were the ones
we all agreed fitted together as a coherent bunch.

'The others - about five I think - were the final numbers we recorded.
By that time we were getting pretty confident about all the fucking
buttons and flashing lights in the studio, and we were getting...yeah,
I'd say we were getting pretty ambitious with the whole thing.
Obviously the fact that we didn't have a producer to work with this
time meant we were having to do it on our own. At first we were
shitting it big time because we were a bit in awe of the whole studio
being at our fingertips. It was like putting a bunch of fucking chimps
in charge of the country's nuclear defence system, you don't know what
sort of shit storm is gonna kick off. But like I say, eventually we
got comfortable with it and by the time the final songs rolled round
we were starting to behave like the Beatles and George Martin during
Pepper! Liam was fucking about with all kinds of things, taking a DAT
machine home with him every night, making sampled recordings of
running water from his kid's bath time and the spin dryer. It got a
bit mad at some points but it's all good in the end.'

This is certainly a new Noel Gallagher. Sitting here with him in the
group's London rehearsal room (Liam, Andy, Gem and Alan are all out to
lunch. Noel has agreed to skip his break and talk to us - under the
condition that 'one of your fucking mob runs out to buy the
sandwiches) not only does he have the glint (which was a permanent
fixture for so many years in the mid-nineties) back in his eye, but he
is also talking about taking Oasis in a sonically-different direction.

'Don't get me wrong, we're not gonna start doing a Nine Inch Nails
album, with all pretentious shit going on. But we are having some new
ideas, and they're natural, rather than us just sitting there thinking
'we must make this sound different.' I suppose it helps that Andy went
to art college, because he comes up with a lot of the ideas we've been
having. All in all I'm really pleased with the stuff we already have
for the next album and even though I'm enjoying life on the road these
days, I can't fucking wait to get back in the studio and finish the
rest of it.'

This is certainly intriguing stuff. Even more so when Noel allows us
to hear the rough mixes of those songs already completed for album
six. His already talkative mood is destined to increase during the
preview of these tracks. And so, with future Oasis material burning in
one ear, and Noel Gallegher's excited voice ringing in the other, we
set to work on the unlabelled tape that has just appeared from the
chief's jacket pocket.

Gallagher introduces the first number as 'the most rock and roll song
I've done since Columbia.'

Noel: I came up with this one a couple of years back, just picked the
guitar up one day and it was like fucking hell man, this is the
bollocks! It's the first song I've written thats based around a guitar
riff, 'cause I'm not exactly Jimi Hendrix, I do melodies normally, but
this was different, gritty punk rock. Theres only about seventeen
words, as you can hear, and I got a bit fucking lazy with the chorus,
just 'come on, come on' over and over, but I like it.

GC: What did the band make of it?

Noel: They all fucking loved it man, especially Liam the cheeky cunt,
first thing he said when I played it was 'It's only been 6 fucking
years since you wrote something that good you lazy cunt!!' *laughs*
But no it was gonna go on Heathen Chemistry, but we decided to take
that one in a more pop-rock sort of direction, and I wanted Revival
for a heavier sort of record really.

GC: You said it's like 'punk rock' but theres a noticeable psychedelic
edge to it too.

Noel: Yeah, what it was, I was listening to 'Ultraviolet' by U2, and I
fucking love that swirly sort of weird shit at the begninning of the
song, so I was like,to the rest of the band, 'why don't we use
something like that in one of our songs?' They weren't having it at
first untill I threatened to dock 'em all three months wages, ha! So I
put this sort of fucking cloud of psychedlic shit at the begining of
'Revival' and it makes you think 'hang on this sounds very prog-rock!'
then this massive fucking riff comes in, quite a nice, whats the
word?... contrast I think.

Next is a Gem composition, the already much talked about 'The Roller'.

Noel: The Roller was the first song Gem played for the band out of the
bunch he'd written for the last album, and at first I wanted to group
it with 'Hung In A Bad Place' on that record, but it didn't sound
quite right, the vibe wasn't there.

GC: It was quite retro, T-Rex style originally wasn't it?

Noel: It fucking was, yeah, but we held it back from Heathen Chemistry
in case we found that we could do something with it, it's a good
fucking rock and roll tune. So, we came to record a lot of stuff for
the next album, and Gem was playing "Roller" and he was ribbing me
saying it should have been on the last album when Andy piped up: "Why
don't we jazz it up with some psychedelic touches, and re-arrange the
structure of the song?" So we sat down and thought about it, we had
this straight-ahead rock song, but what could we do with it? We
settled on leaving the intro the same but with a lot of distorted
guitars and then the song kicks in like normal, rock and roll stuff,
like we've always done but then the song just stops dead and this
terrifying distorted orchestra suddenly comes in and we put one of
Andy's songs in the middle, its totally different, our fucking "Day In
The Life". Our Liam wasn't having it though.......

GC: Why not?

Noel: He thought it was too weird, he liked the original more basic
version more. Having said that, he changed his tune when I told him he
couldn't have one of his new songs on the album if "The Roller" wasn't
going on, soon changed his tune.(laughs). But no, when we'd got the
instrumental down, we got Liam to do his vocal parts and he sounds
fucking amazing on it, I think this is our best-ever song, its a
complete band song, all of us contributed so much to it.

The tape now winds on to what Noel describes as 'the only ballad on
the next album.' Another familiar title: 'Revolution Song'....

Noel: I wrote this one some years back now, and I always fucking
forget to put it on an album, its a really good tune.

GC: Its reminscent of "Little By Little" from Heathen Chemistry.

Noel: Well, Little By Little was basically Revolution Song but longer
and more typically Oasis really. But when it came to putting it on
this album, with the overall sort of, the fucking blend of the guitar
sound of our debut with a lot of cuntfucking psychedelic stuff, I
thought this song could be something else, a bit of an overhaul.

GC: Didn't you sing this track originally?.

Noel: Yeah, now Liam sings it, and he nailed it first time he did it,
one of his best vocals.

GC: You said you changed the song quite a bit.

Noel: Ok, we had the original song which was quite nice and
everything, but I just felt it needed something extra. So I added an
orchestra and choir to it, but it still didn't feel epic enough so I
took a lot of another song called "Slow" and added it in. Its a bit
like The Roller the way we stitched two songs together, but this time
with two ballads.

GC: I have to say, it sounds monumental, one of the most impressive
things you've done it quite a while.

Noel: I should fucking hope so! The amount of time it took to fucking
get right, and since Liam had already done his vocal first time
'round, he was sitting there very smug, heckling all of the band when
we were trying to get it right, the cunt! haha.

And with that, the chief puts his tape back in his pocket, probably
resigned to the fact that much of its contents will be uploaded onto
the global village long before the album they are destined to appear
on has even been completed.

'That's the age we live in,' remarks Noel, as I point out this fact to
him (not that I needed to) 'If people want to download stuff before
its even in the shops, fair play to them. It would be nice if they
liked the tunes and decided to buy the album.'

We leave him to finish preparations for the band's imminent world tour
and, as we do, it seems apparent that Noel Gallagher has finally
accepted the modern age. From the evidence he has just played us, it
sounds as though he might be willing to embrace it.

cheers
