I have (remote) access to the number of Linux machines. I need to choos the most powerful among them to run a large program. Is there a way to check CPU speed and RAM available remotely?

I seriusly doubt that normal user has priviledges to read that file..
I'd try
$ dmesg
Or would run
$ free
$ df
$ top
as those are usually avalivable...
I'd try also some benchmark, because it might came out that 2xPIII 600 is
slower than pII 400 because of heavy load ... For benchmarking purpose I'd
suggest combination of time (man time) and compilation of some code..
