I have a Athlon 2600 and am about to load up my copy of UFO that was optimised for running on PCs back in about 2000. Will I need to use one of the pieces of software that can slow a processor down to run UFO properly on my machine, or will the game run okay? I ask because I remember trying to play my 486-era copy of UFO on my old PII 333 and being unable to cope with the scroll/movement speed, even with everything set to '1'. Can anyone recommend a decent processor slower? I know when I was last in this ng there were one or two that were quite popular. Thanks in advance.

Well, I use SETI, which also fits in quite nicely with the theme! :) All you have to do is put SETI to have "Normal" processor priority, which makes quite a dent on X-Com's running speed. -- The DervMan www.dervman.com

You could try this turbo app that allows you to set the entire speed of the computer: http://www.xcomufo.com/turbo.zip But I think the best thing would be to get a dos version of the game and play it with the msdos emulator called dosbox. Not only does it offer a decent speed through all aspects of the game, you can also take advantage of the prepatched version of xcom that have working original sound effect and music. You can find info for getting it to work with xcom here: http://www.xcomufo.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2989 Hope that helps. -Micah micahdg@xcomufo.com www.xcomufo.com "Majick" <pushthelionheart@y2j.com> wrote in message news:c7l32m$1n7$1@newsg3.svr.pol.co.uk... > I have a Athlon 2600 and am about to load up my copy of UFO that was > optimised for running on PCs back in about 2000. If you have the Collector's Edition version, it should run OK. But you will probably need the display fix which Micah mentions in your other thread.

Seems like you need to set it to different speeds for battlescape and geoscape though... I actually found an X-Com page that offered two .dll files for UFO and TFTD. You'd double-click the .dll, which would then open a box in which you could choose which program you wanted to run (in this case UFO) and it worked fine, no graphics hassle, no speed problems. Problem is, I just tried out XCOMUtil and it seems to have wiped the .dll off my computer, and now I can't find the page where I downloaded it from :-( Only X-Com could drive tme to such heights of distraction to find a stupid poxy file like this. I know the two files were called xcom1.dll and xcom2.dll... Does anyone know where I might be able to find them to download again? Thanks, again, in advance... I really think you are talking about the most recent version of f0dder's loader, which can be found here: http://f0dder.schwump.net/misc.htm It includes a patch.dll, and when you double-click ldr_xcom1.exe, it opens a box in which you can choose which program you want to run, such as UFO. But, that might not be it, anyway. If it is not, please let me know when you find the program you had; I would be very interesting in it. I'm still not sure it's the one I dowloaded yesterday, but problem solved :-) Thanks!
