As far as I know, no, although some people have said they did get a
country back. But even then, that country's funding started at 0, so
it didn't really help. 

Losing USA early is a big problem, but it's can be survivable. If you
get lots of UFO activity and can successfully raid UFO landing or
crash sites, you can make a lot of money. Manufacturing stuff and
selling it can work too.

it's only June year 1 :P
Funding is going well, like you say, you make loads of cash from selling
corpses and alien aritfacts.

And it's such fun hitting a lone Lobsterman with seven Gauss firearms turn

Wonder if Lobstermen taste the same as Lobster, only with more meat
per catch... I guess if they were "cought" using a few cases of HE
they could be sold as "pre-BBQ'd" hehehe.

I think I might go on and try Terror after I've finished with XCom - enemy
unknown, I bought a pack with Xcom, Terror, Apocalypse, Interceptor and
email, think at the time it was about Ł20, well worth it :) (I've since seen
it for Ł5 arrghh).

As for buying the dead aliens, I always assume it's the media for some
reason (???).  I think at the moment I have like 45 sectoid corpses, think I
need a clear out!
Just had my first Muton mission, those buggers are hard skinned, much prefer
Ethereals who die when you parp at them :P

I think there was a bit in the manual (or maybe the strat guide) where an a
soldier wondered who was buying all the alien bodies, and another said "Haven't
you tried that new sushi?"
