DosBox Questions

Hi,

I've installed Dosbox and have run tftd. However, it's jerky, with delays
between mouse clicks and app response. Also, although the game sounds
work, the music does not. Can someone help me to resolve these issues?

It's fun to play the game again, even with the issues I've mentioned above.
I can't remember how many nights I spent playing TFTD back in the day. I
rate tftd as one of the greats, along with Fallout 1/2 and RTCW

Thanks for your help.

The jerky ness is the speed settings.. you can use ctrl+F11 and
ctrl+F12 to change the speed.

to fix the sound. from within dosbox run setup from the xcom directory

just accedpt the default settings.. (do not rase the sound chanels
above 4) and try soundblasterFM for the music. some windows sound
cards dont support General Midi well so dosbox will not port the musit
to the midi outpoot.

if you want to permanently set the speed for the game so you dont have
to speed it up every time you load it.

from inside DosBox run:

config -writeconf ufo.cfg

then check the folder that you stared dosbox from and use notepad to
open ufo.cfg

look for the section titled [cpu] and the line cycles=1800
adjust the number higher to speed up dosbox.
I have mine set to cycles=8000 and it runs perfect on both my 2700+
and my 1800+ systems.

to use the the saved config file you have to lauch dosbox with either
a batch file or from the command line..
use the command

Dosbox -conf ufo.cfg

After a little experimenting.. the jerky ness can also be caused by
setting the Cycles to fast. if I set it to 14000 or higher, my CPU
spikes to 100% and the game runs realy coppy..

The sytem requirements could be quite hight for DOSBox. They dont have
anything recomended at this time.

I dont know if it works go to
http://www.xcomufo.com/x1faq.html
Click-pause sound error
I don't know what causes this problem, but I do know how to fix it. Download
this file: musfix.dll and place it in the main UFO Defense folder. Now run
the game, and the click-pauses should be eliminated.

and try this.

I don't think that would work because the musfix.dll file is only called
with f0dder's fix file, which only works with the collector's edition of the
game. I think the people using dosbox are running the dos version of xcom,
so the fix file could not be used. Thanks for the idea, though.

DOSBox gets the problem if it's trying to use more CPU cycles than are
avalible. (ie. your cpu is to slow for the curent speed setting)

try using the speed controls (alt F11 or ctrl F11.. i dont remember)
to slow down DosBox till the sound steddies out. altho this may be to
slow for decent game play.

I find the default speed of 1800 CPU cycle is to slow and that 8000
cycles will tolerable (for TFTD but great for UFO) but needs a 1800+
to not have the sound choppy. I run at 10000 cycles on my 2700+ but
that runs the CPU at about 95%. Emulators are major CPU hogs.

for the music you need to run setup from within dosbox and set the
music to General Midi on port 330. it that doesent work.. try
Soundblaster music.
