Hahaha they're even sadder than ever. They have 33 'documents' (AKA any
pissweak idea they have) but only 4 crappy looking concept sketches and
0 code. For YEARS people have been telling them not to try to implement
every single feature at once and to just write some damned code but they
either won't listen or aren't capable of doing so.
So what do you think is wrong with the EDF Project?

The main one, perhaps the original error, was to treat the EDF Project as a members-only club. That progressed to the point where people who offered to join were ignored or refused entry (after all, if you're in charge of such a club, the last thing you want is someone capable coming along and actually doing all the things you *said* you'd do). This also deterred people from trying to make a contribution too - after a while, and some dissatisafction with progress by the great unwashed, the 'core boards' were created - making the Project even more of a secret club. Now they just told you to 'wait and see, things will be great, real soon now'. Obviously, not even being able to see anything happening at all led to even more dissatisfaction. The other problem arises from this - all the people who were refused entry to this club. I know of 3 programmers who wanted to join (they've said as much on the EDF board) who were ignored, despite many posts asking for programmers to join up! Is it any wonder nothing is happening at the EDF. I think a general lack of leadership, of visible progress, and of general participation also led to the failure of EDF, but these are secondary to the main problem. I know that the 'leaders' were not up to the task of creating a game, only of dreaming about doing so. Another problem with EDF is that there are people still reading those boards and posting! (apart from the guests, of whom I am one, who try to get something done - too bad the EDF elite only think we're there to cause trouble. quite the opposite in fact, but with very limited means of making our point without being ignored). That wouldn;t be so bad, except that there are the other projects out there that could do with the support of these people who think EDF is the only X-Com remake possible. I suppose sometime soon-ish sourceforge will get around to wiping the project - they are cleaning up the 'dead' projects that have practically no visitors (EDF counts at that. less than 100 forum page views a day), and released no files (in the SF sense only, but EDF havn't released *anything* so it doesn't really matter). You could say that 1 good thing has come oput of EDF - the other X-Com remake projects started by programmers refused entry to the club. Support these spiritual successors to EDF!

Pretty much. Although I disagree that the first mistake was making it a members-only club. The original mistake was completely the opposite! The signal to noise ratio was minimal for a significant amount of time... I applaud those who got in a huff ;) and started off on their own. Good luck to 'em. I hope the first project to reach final release has an "in your face" to EDF in the credits! ;) - Mel C - Watching
