People who love the X-com games should SERIOUSLY check out this web site!

A group of enthusiasts is currently working on making a new and
improved X-com game called Xenocide. Looking at the preleminary
graphics it just looks awsome!! It is based on the first X-com game
and the geoscape is created with that game in mind. Xenocide will keep
old X-com tactical scuad element which makes the game cool.

Anyway, here is the addresses. Just thought there are others out there
with same interest who will find this exiting.

http://www.xenocide.us or
www.projectxenocide.com

Probably some of you have heard about this before...

Cheers.

What are the system requirements?
Pentium III 500mhz or AMD Athlon 500mhz
256 MB RAM
Windows 98SE
DirectX 8.1
GeForce 2 MX400 32mb

Pleased to see this is an open source project, but I'm a little bit
dissapointed by the high system requirements.

I don't think you've kept up to date with PC components...

a 5-year old OS, with a free Graphics runtime, 25 RAM, and a processor you
can't buy anymore as its so obsolete. (a Duron 1.2Ghz is 20, motherboard to
put it on is 35). and a GeForce 2 is 25. They're all retail prices.

I think that the system reqs aren't outlandish at all. Maybe they should
spec a GeForce 200 instead, as they're in the 'cant buy them now' category
too.

High? that is like 3 year old technology... It used to be that games
alwase pushed up the bar on new hardware.

Well yeah, for a UFO clone. Obviously its more than that. But I'm more
interested in the UFO aspects, than alpha-blended geoscapes or what-have-
you. For the hike in system reqs, what exactly are we getting?

I definitely don't - my budget won't stretch to that. I use a 450mhz/384bm
RAM machine with a geforce 2mx.

It really depends on what you are after. I'd like a clone of UFO which is
more easy to tinker with than our old friend, but I care not for cutting-
edge graphics etc.

The idea is to bring UFO to the new games era, with fancy graphics,
multiplayer and stuff without sacrificing that amazing gameplay. We dont
know yet if we will be allowed to use any item of the XCom Universe, but i
am sure Infogrames will let us know for sure in some time. So we had set a
very basic system requirements for today hardware, and in maybe sometime we
will have to make it higher even further because the lowest denominator is
just too low for the current technology. If you add that we expect to finish
at least a very basic playable version in 2 year (that are counting now) we
do not have a lot of time to hack special code for older technology (it is a
waste of effort). If someone is interested in doing so, the only thing it
has to do is join the team and program it, provided that we dont make our
artist work too troublesome (like make multiple models just to handle low hw
specs)... For a UFO clone whats better than UFO?

Don't mean to be the proverbial wet noodle, but doesn't Sid Meier have
the rights to X-Com now? The faithful and hoping he'll revive it for
a new game, in which case you guys might have a really hard time
getting official sanction. Or do you think this won't affect things?
For the record, I hope it doesn't have any effect as I'm looking
forward to seeing the result of your efforts. If it incorporates a
lot of the stuff that Xcomutil allows, so much the better. :)

Thanks for all the hard work.

For the records, someone from our Team had already contacted Firaxis and
they do not own the rights of XCom, the actual owner of the trademark and
copyrights is Infogrammes after they bought Hasbro Inc.

Xenocide is a game made from Fans to the fans (we are fans too), so any
improving we can make without sacrificing both timeliness and gameplay will
be considered...

I'd just avoid this chestnut altogether and develop your own universe.
XCom was just a concoction of common b-movie and 50s sci-fi book plots
(with some Jules Verne thrown in for good measure); and concepts such as
laser guns, UFOs, Greys etc. are too widespread to be a copyright problem
in their own right.

On the other hand, I preferred xcom to similar games, and the plot,
despite being somewhat second-hand, was definitely a contributing factor.

I'd keep the greys and laser guns, the concept of a 'mental heirarchy' of
aliens, the genetic engineering but stray away from things as blatant as
muton-esque monsters, etc.

What I think would be quite cool is an element of the 'doom' computer
game series (at least, an element derived from the utterly poor spin-off
novels) where the aliens gradually learn our most basic fears from
abductions during the course of the game, and future waves of aliens are
designed to mimic our demons and nightmares.

Finally, one major criticism I'd level at the xcom tech tree was you had
to embrace alien technology to get anywhere. It would be nice to have the
alien branch being one option, but continuing stubbornly along the human
path would yield different advantages.

(yeah I think turning the alien tech on themselves was a critical part of
the game, but you had to use alien alloys to get even one tech increase
in armour for example.. maybe if the human tech had more of a fighting
chance? :) )

If only copyright law was so simple. Of course there's the small factor
the Infogrames have got lots of high paid lawyers and the fact that we
can't just ignore it as it is after all their property.

If you made the descriptions editable, shouldn't be a problem. Sectoids
would be Krolls from the planet Tharg until you went in and edited them.

If the guys had the resources, time and imagination, I'm sure they could
come up with nifty alternatives & hybrid technology and tech trees. Just
gotta remember how much time they have to accomplish this project.

Wishing the Xenocide team the very best.

They've reached cult status amongst the doom community, although only
amongst those people who haven't read them.

I have 1, 2 and 4. I bought 1 & 2 in Game many years ago, and fetched 4
from amazon out of curiosity in the last couple of years. They are all out
of print and may be fairly sale-able amongst the doomworld frequenters if
you fancy some cash.

Don't forget Lovecraft.
Deep ones - Lovecraftian monster.
T'Leth - Similar to R'lyeh, where the great alien priest Cthulhu lies
dead but not dead, projecting terrible images into peoples dreams.

They're not uncommon at second hand book shops here. I would have bought
them but I stick to the $1-2 bargain bin books.
