Subject: Getting Xcom Apocalypse to Work in XP

I finally got Xcom to work in XP and man was it complicated, my first
problem was that it wouldn't complete the install, it bombed out at 95%
whatever class I chose, then it wouldn't run at all, then the sound wouldn't
work at all and finally the mouse was slower than my grandma in her morris
minor, I solved it like this...

1. To get the game files I installed Xcom in windows 95 and copied them over
to XP, because I only have one machine I used VMware version 4 beta, which
at the moment is free, with host network only and copied it through to the
XP system, but you could use a network and an old machine, or you could burn
them to a cd on a win95 machine. However if you install on the win 95 system
you have to make sure the destiantion and source of the files is the same as
the XP setup you have, on my machine I have 2 hard drives so I put the
install files (Direct from the CD) onto my D: partition (what was the CDROM
drive on the win95 Virtual Machine) and the game files (Installed on the
hard drive) into my C: partition

2. Next I had to install the NoCD crack
http://one.megagames.com/pcgamefixes/xcom3_cd.zip Instructions included in
the download this coupled with settind every .com, .EXE and .Bat file being
set to win95 compatibility got the game started

3. I installed VDMSound
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/vdmsound/VDMSound-2.0.3a-WinNT-i386.msi?d
ownload With legacy CDRom support enabled (Dunno if this makes a difference
but it doesn't hurt) and the sound worked, allthough it was a little crackly

4. Finally I installed mousectl.com http://www.minnemacs.com/sandbox/xp.html
(just scroll down to find it) I've found that using mousectl
10,11,13,16,20,25,31,38 gives me reasonable mouse accelleration

That's it, I only have one problem, it's mouse related everytime I try to
scroll the screen up or left, it shoots down, for now I'm just using the
cursor keys but it's irritating, any ideas?

Hi Chris.
How do you actually use the mousectl program? Do you add a line in the
autoexec.vdms file? If so what is the line I couldn't get the mouse
speed up what ever I tried...

Appreciate the help.

You can put the mousectl line in the autoexec for vdms, you can invoke it
from the command line cos once it's installed it will affect all dos
programs run, until it i uninstalled or the memory is wiped, ie a reboot.

To get the intructions, open the command prompt (Start menu --> run [type
'cmd' and press enter]) then navigate to the mousectl directory and type
'mousectl /?' to get the help screen with all the commands.

Basically the mousectl program seems to acellerate the mouse there are a
series of 8 numbers following the 'mousectl' ie 'mousectl
10,11,13,16,20,25,31,38' 10= 1x acceleration 25 = 2.5x accelleration and so
on, keep tweaking the numbers until the cursor works as you wish it.
Although I think you might have to uninstall it before the new numbers take
effect 'mousectl /u' not sure though cos I gave up on XP cos it crashed too
much and didn't do what I wanted it to do so I'm back with win98 (I know it
crashes even more than XP, but at least I understand it better (I never did
get on with NT)

Out of interest, anyone who's watching, how do you go about making Xcom Apoc
work on Mandrake Linux 9.1, I'm looking to install it soon and I have no
idea about porting, I know about as much about linux as you need to, to get
it online and update it but it's something I need to work on

I dunno if that helped but I'm not really that good at fixing these things I
just got lucky
Regards
Chris Burford
