XCOM - TFTD CD problems

After having problems with my original, floppies version of this, I
purchased the CD version of the game. I'm having some real problems with
getting this to work, especially when it comes to sound issues.

I have found there is a missing file, from what I can gather, called
Sound.exe[?] - a DOS file, which I have found in my other TFTD games. I
have tried to copy this file to the new CD version of TFTD on my system - my
HD is partitioned, so I now have three copies of TFTD sitting around!
However, this still does not work. I can access the setup, to sort out the
sound & music details, but after trying to configure, the following message
keeps popping up at the DOS prompt:

Error writing sound config file;
Null pointer assignment

I have no idea what the problem is, as I have a SB AWE64, which I imagine
should be okay, since it works with my floppy version of the game. I don't
believe there is any problems with my system - but any suggestions would be
really appreciated!

Sys Spec:

P166 MMX
3.5g HD
64Megs SDRAM
24xCDROM
AWE64 SB
Matrox 4m GFX card [Millennium, IIRC]
Win98
Intellipoint mouse

Any help really, really appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion, which I have experimented with. Seems weird
though, I've copied the whole CD, and tried running the setup from that, but
it still insists on giving the same message, amongst other things.

Ah well, I'll keep trying

Have you changed the file attributes of all the files you copied from
CD to HD away from read-only? It sounds like it's trying to update a
configuration file which has been marked as read-only.

Forgive my ignorance, but I am a little unclear as to which files should be
unmarked as read only - I assume you mean the files in the sound directory?

I'm only curious to know why I cannot play the animated sequences, except
when run straight from the CD - which is when I can't get sound to play at
the same time, naturally cos I cannot write to the CD.

I've tried to copy the whole CD into a directory, but this has so far led to
no luck with both sound and animations running together...

Thanks

Had problems with this game, too. Stumbled across a directory on the CD
called 'harddisk' or something to that effect, and it turns out the 'install'
you can run from there installs the entire game to your drive. I *think* you
may loose some of the cut-scene or intro movies, but you won't need the cdrom
any more to play. Give that a shot...

Thanks Craig, I'll try that out later!
