Interplay included Mo'Slo Deluxe with the Ultimate Strategy Archives, but
unfortunately we did not create ideal documentation for its use with 'X-Com:
UFO Defense'. I've since devised a way to slow X-Com battles for enjoyable
play at 300MHz. The instructions below assume you have installed moslo.com
into the folder c:\moslo, and that you are running the game from Win95/98.
Also, the edited batch file only works with Mo'Slo Deluxe versions 2.0 and
above. (Sorry, it does NOT work with the eval 1.x versions.)
(1) Play the game until you begin a ground assault. Click the '?' button on
the battlescape bar and adjust 'FIRE SPEED' to '1'. Battle a bit to check
speed.
(2) Make a rough estimate of how much slower you want fire events to happen.
(If the events are slow enough you don't need Mo'Slo -- simply adjust other
speeds to taste.)
(3) Make a backup copy of the file 'Ufo.bat' in the Ufo folder. NOTE: in
order to see the '.bat' extension in Win95/98, you must have display of
filename extensions enabled in Windows Explorer and My Computer. To do this,
double-click 'My Computer', click 'View', click 'Options' ('Folder Options'
in '98), click the 'View' tab, uncheck the box labeled 'Hide MS-DOS file
extensions...' ('Hide file extensions...' in '98), click 'OK'.
(4) Open the file 'Ufo.bat' in a text editor (such as Notepad). Delete ALL
of the text and insert the following 22 lines---
@echo off
cls
%2ufoexe\black
%2sound\sndstart
%2intro %2
%2ufoexe\black
%2ufoexe\geoscape "0" %2
if errorlevel 2 goto begin
goto end
:begin
%2ufoexe\black
if "%1"=="" goto noslo
%2c:\moslo\moslo.com %1 ufo2exe\tactical "1" %2
goto geo
:noslo
%2ufo2exe\tactical "1" %2
:geo
%2ufoexe\black
%2ufoexe\geoscape "1" %2
if errorlevel 2 goto begin
:end
%2sound\sndend
(5) Save the file and exit the editor.
(6) In Windows Explorer or My Computer, navigate to the Ufo folder,
right-click the Ufo.bat icon and click 'Create Shortcut'. An icon 'Shortcut
to Ufo.bat' should appear.
(7) Right-click the shortcut icon. Click 'Properties'. Click the 'Program'
tab. Position the cursor at the end of the text in the 'Cmd line:' textbox
and type a space and forward slash followed by the percent of normal speed
you estimated in step 2. For example, if you think the fire events should be
half-fast, type " /50" (without the quote marks). I've found that " /36"
works good at 300MHz.
Make sure the 'Close on exit' box is checked, then click 'OK'.
(8) Double-click the shortcut icon to run the game with Mo'Slo. If the fire
events are still too fast, quit the game, go back to step 7 and substitute a
lower number.
(9) Once you get the fire speed OK with Mo'Slo, adjust the other speed
controls within the game as needed.
If you have a problem, restore the backed-up ufo.bat file.
This method works for me. I hope others will find it useful.
