Blast effects & smoke (from explosive area weapons & grenades) can
cause stun damage. X-Com soldiers in Power Suits & _some_ aliens
are immune to smoke inhalation damage.

Check out the grey line on the red health bar (you need the Mind
Probe to see alien stats). When grey > red, the alien/soldier
becomes unconcious stunned. Don't forget that aliens can wake
up (but not pick up weapons chasing down an unarmed alien to
finish the mission can be real waste of time). Medi-kits can
revive unconcious soldiers.

Research alien stun bombs & the small launcher if you want an
efficient way to stun aliens from a distance.

Yeah, definitely research live aliens. As well as race info you
can also get additional info depending on the alien's job.
(I research, in order of importance: Commander, Leader, Engineer,
Navigator, Soldier, Medic).
