From TFTD to UFO... MIDWAY REACT is temporarily shut down!

Well, it's been a couple of days now, since I installed UFO, after many
years of owning the game, but never actually playing it.

As some of you may be aware, I have been a TFTD player, since I bought
that game first, liked it and then bought UFO. However, I found UFO to be
to unrefined all those years ago, until the ng started and people started
posting...

So, my thoughts on the game to date.

Okay, admittedly, the graphics are pretty basic by today's standards, but as
I keep playing, the more it reminds me of my Sinclair days with Rebelstar,
and later with Laser Squad. Both these games captivated me above all else
[probably bar Elite] and I found myself coming back to them time after time.

Heck, I gotta say it - UFO is great! After years of playing TFTD, it was
kind of repetitive, with the seafloor landscapes... I really looked forward
to terror missions [bar artefact sites], since if offered guerrilla warfare
and familiar terran terrain - something I wanted to get my teeth into, but
never could in TFTD. I became pretty deft at TFTD originally, but that was
over a year ago, easily. During the last month, I reinstalled and got
hooked again, until I started playing UFO.
UFO's colour schemes are a bit loud and busy at times, but the graphical
issues fall away when I get involved in a game. I'm still involved in the
first game since I installed it, and after a really poor - I mean _really_
poor start, I've managed to get to grips with the game. I cannot get enough
of the guerrilla tactics and cityscapes! My troopers are still developing -
I lost two during my last encounter which really hurt - but the tide is
turning. The biggest godsend is Laser rifles - not having to worry about
damned ammo is a real blessing. Heck, I'm finding it difficult to get
anywhere near the 80 item limit on the Skyranger!
And as for bases and money... Well, I'm comfortable at around $4-5m
after each mission, after spending on additional base components and general
items for the base - weapons and so forth. I'm finding it really difficult
to spend the money!

As for the aliens, well I'm still dealing with greys and floaters [hmm,
interesting name - kinda reminds me of something else, but the least said
the better]. The occasional cyberdisk shows up on terror missions, but I'm
in no doubt that some of the tougher aliens will be showing up soon.
One thing that has caught my attention is the amount of landed UFO's
compared to TFTD - most of my encounters were with shot down USO's, but in
UFO, there are many more actual landings, which in itself is a novelty.

Admittedly, since this is my first game, I'm on the beginner level - to
acclimatise myself to the nuances of the game, you understand. Give it til
the end of the week, I reckon I'll be finished and moved on to veteran or
above.

Luckily, playing TFTD has given me the basics and allowed me to progress
through UFO fairly quickly. I'm still in the exploration stage of the game,
finding out things generally, but this will soon turn towards getting
tactical with the whole shebang.

Overall, I can see myself becoming hooked on UFO in a bigger way than
TFTD simply because of the landscapes - the variety simply has more to
offer - deserts, snowscapes and best of all, buildings, lots and lots of
buildings.

Anyway, enough nonsense, back to the game :-)
