People are modding UFO:A, I hear, but how?

Specifically I'd like to increase the duration of my smoke grenades.
Currently if you throw a grenade at your feet the smoke only lasts
long enough for you to get out your rifle again, but then you need
to throw another smoke bomb.  The time could be increased tenfold
without it seeming like a cheat.

Please help me out if you know how.
