how do you tell whether or not you are on a winning or losing streak
when you enter the last mission.

Well, if you're on the winning tree, you'll be getting ready to
launch the final assault on Kilrah.. If you're on the losing
tree, I THINK that you've withdrawn and are defending Earth.
(I've never seen the losing tree, but I think that you defend
Earth, right? I've also heard that the Kilrathi Dreadnought
is in that mission?)

If you ever jump to Proxima, you're on the losing path. Back up to
the mission right before that and replay it.

I am going to play it through modem and want to give the person a
surprise when we go head-to-head combat.

If you want to give the person a surprise, GET BETTER! Don't
cheat!
