"Hello Barbera, good evening everyone." For some years I have been dreaming about writing a WC like game. I'm now well under way to make a "world engine" that actually works. My primary objective was to make it able to run in a command line interfase like cmd in windows or bash on linux. The game is writen in PERL and uses a mysql database. When ever I get a Nokia 770, I will port to that gadget. :-) Both Perl and sqlite is to be ported, AFAIK. But being written in PERL also makes it possible to port to a WEB based game. It is not a real time game where there's a lot of action onscreen, but more a game from an admirals view point where you issue orders to your fleet throughout the front line. The design should make it multi player in the future. But a lot of coding needs to be done. But now to the subject at hand: REALISM. I've been thinking about the lack of realism in wing commander. The realism in the books are more acurate than in the games - for mostly obviously reasons. But to be able to fly around in a star system governed by the rules of gravity. Remember when Tolwyn tried to navigate near a black hole in the book Action Stations? I would very much like to write that in to my game. The model is relatively easy to descibe mathematicaly, but to write a "pilot program" that can successfully navigate around a stellar body's gravity well on its own, is much harder. I had to think for allmost a day about the routine that desides wether a ship should accelerate or break on its way to a destination/waypoint. And that was just when the ship was traveling in a straight line. What if the ship needs to make a turn towards the destination? Even more thinking and coding. :-) I'm writing the game because I love to design and write programs, and because I love the Wing Commander game. As many of you. What is your ideas on realism when it comes to navigation, gravity and missions? Thanks in advance. Michael from Denmark PS: I have to stop coding for a few days, because of my own wedding.
