I was just thinking the other day I really should pull out WC3 again and give it another go. Was easily my favourite WC game.

I'm 45 and still gaming. I will be firing up wc1,2,3,4 as soon as I finish setting up a PII with DOS 6.22, win98se. I even have a functional voodoo2 with drivers!

I keep track of a bunch of things like this, and it's sometimes sad to note that I don't have as much time to play as I used to and it's not as easy for new people to get into these games. >I was just thinking the other day I really should pull out WC3 again and >give it another go. Was easily my favourite WC game. Yeah, I'm not sure where to restart, because I wouldn't have time to go through everything. WC2 or WC3 probably.

Maybe there IS a reason to keep my wife's old PII-266 w/ DOS & MGA Millenium :-) Mattias

I even have a functional voodoo2 with drivers! Dont forget a program to slow down the PC or WC 1 and 2 will be unplayable. I remember the first time i tried WC 2 on a Celeron 400, damn that was fast, hehe. And the only Wing Commander which need the voodoo 2 is Wing Commander Prophecy or not? Markus

Prophecy and Secret Ops (WCP follow-up), and even then there was only 2 and 1 (respectively) graphics feature that non-Voodoo machines couldn't do, so it wasn't all that terrible a loss, at least IMO. (Of course, they're just as available as the dos version.)

WCP/SO/UE are also very Glide Wrapper friendly. So if you want that feature(s) just use one... -- The following is a new Windows message that is under consideration for the planned Windows 2001: * File not found. Should I fake it? All the early WC games work fine on it, so there's no need to keep an old PC around anymore. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/ Patryk

Its problem is in the graphics emulation. Vesa graphics just doesn't cut for me for WC and the sound emul is still a bit weak. For WC III, WCIV, WCP, the voodoo 2 is the way to go using a real soundblaster card; dx/d3d just wasn't very good back when these games were out. The PC I built from odd parts, other peoples discards, is a kick-ass state of the art system for 1995 ($50 total): Intel PII400, 440BX chipset 128MB ELSA TNT2 32MB AGP STB voodoo2 SB PCI128 20GB HD DOS 6.22, Win98se, Slackware Linux 10 Just the thing to run WC - and I don't have to fight to get an DOS emulator running (I have MAME32, N64, Sega Genesis emuls running on it as well). I ran WCP in WIn98 and Win2K with a Geforce DDR, ad later with a G4ti4800, and the graphics qual is not as good as with the voodoo2 and some graphics setting are not available (eg lens flare). I used a glide to OPENGL wrapper as well in win2k but the wrapper is prone to crash. Besides, the kids can use it to surf, IM and do homework so they don't hog my main system!
