Did WC3 have a "soundblaster 16" option for digital sound effects? I ask
just because I am studying the evolution of DOS audio for the hell of it.

Yes, imho. I played in the DOS version of Win98 under Virtual PC, which uses
a SB 16 as default soundsystem

Your reply does not answer my question. I understand what you are saying
but
the fact that Virtual PC's SB16 emulation works well with WC3 is totally
irrelevant
to me.

Let me try asking in a slightly different manner. When you are setting
up/configuring
WC3, after selecting SB 16 for digital sound effects you should be given the
options
for port, IRQ, and two DMA (or DRQ) settings - all in the game, not in the
DOS
environment.

What I am asking is totally a matter of fact, either it does or it does not.
There is no
room for opinion.

Yes, SB16 is a digital sound setting for WC3, and it lets you fart
around with the various addresses.

AFAIK, SB16 has been an available option for WC games since the
release of WC2 (1992). (IIRC there was an SB16 bundle kit that came
with WC2, but don't quote me on that.)

WC3 has a special configuration utility that handles all of that. You
can't access it directly from the game, though (if I remember correctly)
it is available via a command-line option. Also, if I remember
correctly, it does give the options, but it also tries to detect as much
as it can. It does do testing to verify settings.

The command line option was "-i", added after wc3.exe.

afaik the SB16 settings were pretty much the default. I had an SB Pro clone
at the time so the DMAs were a little different; I=5 D=1 T=4 A=220 iirc, but
it used to struggle under W'95 as my ISA s/card used Windows Sound System
(cr*p) so i just used to boot to DOS to play WC3, which was better anyway
cos it gave direct access to system resources.

There was a digital speech pack for the original release of WCII, but that
doesn't imply SB16 support.

I want to tack on to my thoughts - didn't WCIV, and not WCIII, advertise
having 16 bit audio during the cinematic sequences for users with SB16
sound cards? I recall seeing that on Origin's web page but any trace of
Wing Commander is long gone from their site.
Restrict discussion to DOS versions.
