Hi, I know this post doesn't fit in this group, but since I didn't find any alt.games.dos or *.classic or anything like that I post it here where I hope to get help... The game I'm searching for must have been released before 1989, perhaps even before 1987. It already used (16 or 256? I'm not sure) colors at ega resolution. I played it on a Kontron 286 10MHz PC with 640kb DOS MEM and 340kb extended MEM onboard. The gameplay was as follows: You control a little green figure (looked like a bird or sth...) just using the arrow keys. The playing screen showed some kind of ocean with lots of sinking little isles on it. Some went down pretty fast and some lasted longer. The goal was to get the coin on the isle in the upper right corner of the screen. You always start on an isle at the left bottom of the screen. To get the coin, you had to find a way over the sinking isles (after a while, they popped up again). On some of them were balls, blue balls, dark red or light red, as far as I remember. The blue balls gave you some extra points where the light red balls gave you lots of points or an extra life. The dark red were dangerous. They could be a trap (isle sinks immediately and you die) or call a monster (some big red ugly thing on two legs trying to get you) or give you points or extra life. Every time you collect a coin a new field of isles appeares with a new coin in the upper right and you starting at the lower left. The farer you got the smaller and more became the isles (start was about 4x4 isles and while you collect coins you get up to levels with 10x10 isles or so). So please, if anybody can remember that little funny game, would you please help me? Thanks so far, Ice

Meanwhile I found the original game: PERESTROIKA - written in 1990 in Russia :-) One problem remains: I'm not able toslow down my PC to be able to play the game - even moslo doesn't help. I used a Win98 console environment for testing. Does anybody have an idea about other _working_ slowdown tools? Thanks in advance, Ice

Try DosBox. It's not a slowdown tool. It's a full DOS emulator that works for many games (including WC1, but not WC2+ yet). If you can tell me how to actually still run it (for me it crashes right after the Perestroika logo) i'd try my pool of slowdown utils on it. -- The following is a new Windows message that is under consideration for the planned Windows Longhorn: * WinErr 16547: LPT1 not found. Hi... >Ah, but I think Perestroika is actually the software company (I'v got >that exact same version). Err, no. The company was Locis. > If you can tell me how to actually still run it (for me it crashes right > after the Perestroika logo) i'd try my pool of slowdown utils on it. Yeah! That little C program must have full hardware access. For me it pointed out that a secure mode of the Win98 console workes best - without any drivers (Abgesicherter Modus, nur Eingabeaufforderung). Remember, you can't "Enter away" the Perestroika screen, there is some sound coming from the system speaker. When those guys finish singing the screen automaticly disappeares. Just wait for 10 seconds :-) By the way, I managed to slow down my machine (T-Bird B 1.3GHz) accordingly using some really bad tricks: Forst, disable L1 & L2 cache via BIOS, second, have "throttle.exe" and set it to 25%, then use moslo with 40%. The side effect is that some keystrokes don't come through to the game... I'd prefer a less expenditury way, will try DOS Box, but don't have any idea from where to get it legally. OK, so far for now... Cya later, Ice PS: > Austrian, but close. Ooops! The next time I will know! :-D Do you have lots of snow? We have lousy 10cm here in the Turinguan Woods...

Uh, dosbox is available from http://dosbox.sourceforge.net It's free and the source is open. I can't remember if you need a copy of DOS or not.

If DosBox didn't work for you, you could try Bochs Pentium Emulator (another full system emulation tool, bochs.sf.net/), but you might have to work with the developers to get it working fully. You could also try VMware, but that's commercial so you'll have to pay for it. Connectix was. And it was compatible with Linux and other non-Microsoft operating systems. But MS took it over, named it Virtual PC and good bye for it for every not-Windows user

Sorry, my memory says otherwise. I do remember Connectix working with non Microsuck OSes but I also remember Connectix being extraordinarily expensive, like $2k-$3k.
