Freelancer is like Privateer "lite but pretty" "tastes great, less filling."

Starlancer is like Wing Commander, only with some bugs and some missions that
have play balance problems.

The backgrounds in Freelancer are something, especially with all the graphics
turned on.  But there aren't that many plot missions, you can't skip the cut
scenes and the entire game engine is actually less sophisticated than Privateer
was.

Fun, but nothing to revisit, especially as travel time is really *time.*

Pick it up used on half.com -- worth the money, easily a good twenty hours
worth of play before you lose interest.

Interested in mods?  The game mods very, very easy and there are a number of
active multiplayer mods on-line you can join, in addition to unmodified
multiplayer servers.

Game sold well, may be a sequel, may not.

Replacement in what sense? What are you looking for?

I'd most recommend the inofficial addon to Secret Ops - "Unknown Enemy".

I played them all, liked them all - but neither were good replacements for
Wing Commander. Freelancer was better in my opinion... but still lacking the
feel for the characters and the challenge of WC.
