Once again another Freelancer Q....

Greetings once again:

I am doing the mission with Juni escorting 2 freighters with artifacts
after launching from CA minor (you don't seem to have a choice to do
some other missions before meeting her), we do 2 waypoints, at the
3rd, suprise, suprise, the bad guys come out. I have done this one
about 6 times in a row and always get creamed pretty quickly.
Now, before I put the computer through the wall, what am I doing
wrong?

She has me engage the enemy, I can kill one or two, I use up my shield
and bot supplies pretty quickly, my shields tend to get nailed pretty
damn fast, is there a type of shield I should use against these
certain bad guys, they seem to hit really hard and faster than
anything eles seems to.

The game isn't any fun if I keep dying really quick every time.

Thank you for you help!

I'm sure you've passed this mission by now (or just stopped playing the
game), but what I usually do in these situations is stock up on missles and
just hit each enemy with as many missles as I can right off the bat. If I'm
lucky, I'll have taken care of 2 ships relatively quickly and it gives me
time and space to finish off the rest with the guns.

Good luck!

Any shield should be able to stop them...I can do that mission without a
scratch, not boasting just stating a fact! Are you still relying on the
class 1 shield and ship you start with?

You've probably been facing Liberty Rogues up til now, they use laser based
weapons and the graviton shield you've already got stops lasers like a brick
wall...
However, Liberty Rogues aren't a major problem in California, if you look at
the names that come up they are Outcasts. Outcasts tend to use Tachyon based
and Particle based weapons (at least the ones I face do!)
Which means that if you really are in desperate straights try a shield
that's strong v particle guns and/or tachyon guns. The tachyon guns do vast
amounts of damage, a class 4/5 tachyon gun can easily top 200 hull damage
whilst a laser of the same class only makes 80 hull damage...lasers though
have it on the refire rate a Laser can put 4 shots into you in the time that
a Tachyon cannon takes to fire twice! Outcasts also modify their particle
and tachyon cannons to increase damage losing out on range and refire...The
daggers you are probably facing also carry 6 cannons up front so they can be
real pains in the nether regions...probably not filling you with confidence?
Don't despair!

The only way to do it seriously is to get something big and heavy with 5/6
cannons on the front and blast the crap out of them in the first pass, I've
done that mission in a fully equipped Rhino freighter (3 cannons and 5
turrets firing together makes a bloody big hole in anything). Try to mount
cannons that are strong against the shield that you've chosen (i.e. your
shields are weakest against the cannons you've mounted) All the FL opponents
believe that everyone uses their type of weapon so have a shield that stops
their guns cold and guns that make their shields look like paper! Thus blow
away one or two in one pass and the rest go more defensive...

Hope this is of some help?

After you capture and return Ashcroft, you need to focus your efforts on
getting enough funds to buy the Defender ship from the Battleship Missouri.
It carries more firepower than the Starflier and Heavy Fighter shields can
take much more punishment than Light Fighter ones. This ship will serve you
well until you reach the Bretonia system and have access to some better
hardware.

I was using mostly rapid fire weapons at this point in the campaign. I was
still getting used to the game controls and found the faster firing weapons
made up for my relatively poor accuracy. If you do decide to mix and match
guns, try to get ones that fire rounds at the same velocity. If one gun
fires at 700m/s and another at 600m/s, your aim will be off against mid
range targets.

I avoided missiles for pretty much the entire campaign. They're not very
accurate and don't do enough damage to justify giving up a gun slot. Mines,
on the other hand, can be pretty useful. Opt for the seeker versions.
While you're chasing one guy and his buddies are after you, drop a few mines
whenever you straighten out. They'll rarely kill bad guys, but they can
knock them off your tail for a bit and give your shields time to recharge.

During that initial pass, try using the side thrusters to avoid some of the
incoming fire. You can inflict alot of damage on that first pass but the
bad guys can do the same to you. You might want to consider using the
afterburner and evasive maneuvers or staying at cruise speed until you've
gotten behind the enemy group. Once you've mixed it up with the bad guys
they can't focus their fire as easily, saving your shield power and your
overall endurance.

Save your shield batteries for when your shields go down. If you use them
too early you waste some of their potential. The nanobots can be saved for
when your hull is below 1/3. They're pretty expensive for what they do, and
if you can hold out until you can dock you can save yourself a good chunk of
change. Also, beam in loot whenever you dispatch a bad guy. Even in the
middle of a dogfight. Those extra shield batteries or nanobots can come in
handy.
