Privateer 1 again

I've finally got hold of the old PC and I am trying to get it to run
privateer. I've determined that nothing seems to be using the memory block
from D000-DFFF and with the current boot disk there is 582K free base RAM.

1. If I boot into a DOS Win98 environment can it work? Or do I have to try
to get it working using a DOS 6.22 boot disk? I've sysed the hard drive
using a Win98 startup disk, and copied the tools and utilities from the
startup disk. So the drive doesn't have a full install of Win98.

2. Is 582K enough base RAM? I am getting an error message from privateer
when it tries to start which seems to indicate that it wants more base
memory.

Here's the Autoexec and config files I am using.

You're going to want to go into real DOS I believe. A Win98 restart
in DOS should be about the same if that's what you mean.

What's the message? 582 is about enough for most anything WC DOS
related.

You actually don't need the CD drivers and CD extension loaded.
Install from the hard drive by copying the disc to a folder and you can
do away with those and free up more memory.

Search the net for a program called QEMM. This is an old dos memory
manager, and it will easily get you 600k+ free to play anything with all
drivers loaded (cdrom, sb16, mscdex, smartdrv, etc...). QEMM 97 (version
9) works extrememly well.

I'll have to write down the exact message.

How do you point the game at the hard drive? Copy it first and install it
after the copy and take the CD out of the drive?

I'll try it - although I don't know how much free ram there is to play with
loading things into the HMA.

I'll see if I can find a copy.

I think I got some QEMM here somewhere may have to hunt for it though, check
back with me soon.

Copy to HD and install from copy should do it I think. I don't have the
CD version tho.

In theory, one could copy the entire CD contents to hard drive, and
install from there, but in my experience it doesn't copy all the files
right, resulting in my having to manually copy over the files from the
\inst directory.

However, you can use the install routine from a DOS window, installing
from the CD. After the installation is finished, copy priv.tre and
rf.tre to your install directory, and open up [priv/rf].cfg in your
preferred text editor. Edit the line to point to the relevant files
on your HD (only one line in each file, so it's not hard to find ;) ).

The PC in question doesn't have Windows installed, just the DOS components
of 98 from a setup disk. I installed it pretty much as you described above
just a few minutes ago before logging onto the net. I'll have to edit the
RF.CFG file. So far I only edited the PRIV.CFG file and the game ran. I
think I need to install a DOS mouse driver. :-7

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

That would be great! I'd like to make better use of the memory in the PC.
At the moment I've only configured 8MB of EMS. The sad thing is the machine
has 512MB of RAM!

There is one problem with using QEMM, at least as I recall my personal
experience with QEMM 97. Unless I missed a feature (entirely
possible, though I did scour the help files), you can't limit the
amount of memory given to a program.

Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but with Priv/RF, if you have more
than 32MB of memory, sound effects come out all kinds of screwed-up.

Using emm386.exe, you need to include, after the RAM statement, an
amount of memory (in KB, with 1024KB=1MB) to allow the system to use.
I generally used 16384 (16MB) in my specialized boot configurations,
when I could get Privateer to run on my system, as programs from
around that time period really couldn't make use of gobs of memory
anyhow. Considering that Priv/RF only requires 2.5MB of EMS memory in
the first place, 16MB is far more than sufficient to give Privateer
room to play.

OK....found the QEMM disks (2 x 1.44 Mb). It is ver7.5 which came out in
1994 (yeh I know they're ancient...belong in a museum...(I also have Ver
7.0)). Do you still want to try them out?
