Wing Commander IV install on WinXP?

Okay, so apparently the WC4Win95 patch will run under XP, but first I have
to _install_ WC4... and the installer hangs...

booting from a dos bootdisk isn't an option (NTFS formatted harddisk)
I'd like to avoid setting up Win98 on a spare disk (I have a 6GB disk
sitting around) JUST so I can install WC4 and then copy the directory to the
XP disk over the network (using another machine as a waypoint whilst I swap
disks obviously.)

Suggestions anyone?, is there a way to manually install WC4?

TIA

I am not sure about installing, but I'd guess that even a patched WC4
won't work on NTFS.

The boxed native Win95 version of WC4 includes a Windows based installer.
I've tried to package up the installer, but I expect it'll need a lot of
fiddling to make work.. I haven't tested it fully myself. You'll probably
need to extract the zip to a directory somewhere and then copy the contents
of the first WC4 CD to that directory before running the setup exe. You
might also need to edit a file once installed to change the CD path and then
install the W95 game patch. This is all guesswork since I haven't tried
installing by this method myself, but if you are willing to play about to
get it working, I've put the package up at

Seems to run in Win2k for me. There's a weird mouse problem (while
onboard the ship, I can't move the cursor out of an area in the
upper-left corner of the screen), but it runs.

interestign!). The one issue I have run into is garbled sound..... any
