Heya folks... I've been surfing the web for a while now trying to find a place to get Privateer 2 as a download... I would have thought it was out long enough that the copywrite had expired but I guess I was wrong so I surfed on over to ebay and am bidding on a copy. Anyway, anyone know ways to get it to work in XP so I can pre-set things ahead of time? If not I do have a 98 box here that I can use, just trying to be pro-active. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I guess that might have more to do with the fact that the game is 3 CDs
in size...

You'd have had alot more luck when the game was new. You'd have found full ISOs, HD zipped up crap, and ripped copies. 'course not exactly a small game...

Further, there's no way to know if you're DLing the DOS or windows version. As you have XP but no win98 or 95 ont the system, you may have a hard time of it. Privateer2 DOS version (the most common version) will install on an XP system under a DOS box, with compatibility settings in place. The problem is that it probably won't run. Some people say it will, but most say it won't. The Windows version has a nice catch-22 bug attached. The *game* will run under windowsXP, *but* the installer will not. I have this version, and you can install it using win98 (if you have a win98 partition) and run it in XP by creating a shortcut to the executable (forget if I needed any compatibility settings). Since you don't have win98 or 95 installed, this isn't an option for you. I don't know of any workarounds on a pure winXP system. ----------- Thanks MCheu

I had a similar problem installing 'Hardwar' (Something more Wing Commander fans should look out for. In the US, those with access to Big Lots might be able to find it for a mind-numbing $4.99). The work computer (which is a perfect game machine, but primarily used for page-layout and other work-related stuff that's far too boring to go into) has Windows XP Home, and I couldn't get the installer to run. Simple fix: Right-click the installer, go to 'compatability', and change it to Win95. I've managed to install a couple of programs that complained about incorrect Windows version, and that might work for the Win95/98 version of Privateer2. It's likely that the DOS version will not run regardless of what is tried. -- Mike ============== www.rpg-pro.com ==============

I overlooked that -30% on all sale however so in the end I spent about 70 euro cents - LOL. -- I cannot help, but every time I hear "Win ME" I have got the picture of a masochist in my mind, yelling "Hit Me, Hit Me".
