Earlier versions of the Beagel (not my spelling) virus used password
protected ZIP files as the payload delivery method.  The password
keeps virus programs from opening the attachment to look inside and
check for malicious code.

What really gets me, even with my extraordinarily low opinion of
humanity in general, and the online portion thereof in particular,
this virus ever got beyond the initial release, since to let loose the
payload you have to take active, conscious steps (vice accidentally
launching a regular file or having an OE hole exploited to
automatically launch the file without user intervention), namely
entering in a password to access the zip file's contents.

And people sometimes wonder why I'm a cynical, bitter, misanthropic
bastard.
