With WC3, Origins thought they had a final stage game engine, one that they
could use forever.

WC4 came out so quickly because all they had to do was tweak the game engine
and make use of the things they learned from filming WC3.

WC5 came about when they decided they needed a different engine, a closer feel
to arcade games and some other changes.

SO is interesting because they packaged the tweaked game engine with it. But
for the tweaking it would have made a clean expansion pack. With the tweaking
it would break WCP to have it act as a patch/add-on pack (at least on the first
release) like the previous ones did, but at the same time, it was not treated
as a serious stand-alone game the way WC4 was vis a vis WC3.

That affected the download size and the penetration the game had on the market.

But in many ways it was not treated as a new product, not in the marketing
budget, distribution chain or otherwise.

Which makes it a bit of a hybrid, depending on your view, though most outsiders
treated it as an expansion pack.

Note that the demo for Age of Mythology, Titans runs without needing AoM.
Titans a stand-alone different game or an expansion pack?

Even if it can be packaged as a standalone?
