Your first step would be to probably change your newsreader. Free
Agent 1.00 (shareware - ftp.forte.com) or Agent .99 seem to be the
readers of choice in the Windows world. Trumpet Newsreader is also
widely-used.

What you are (usually) seeing is the BINARY file translated into a
TEXT-based format ('cuz some of the various Internet machines that
your message may go thru would have problems with the non-printable
characters). You need a newsreader that can re-translate this Text
into the original Binary format.

Free Agent (or Agent) provides a simple, one-click icon to untranslate
these messages (and, if it's a multi-part posting, and you have ALL
the parts), it'll even recombine them into the original file for you.

There's lots more to it, but this should get your started, at least.
Use Netscape to do an ftp to :

ftp.forte.com

and look for the Free Agent shareware package.
