A week ago I had farmed a few herbs for a raid same night.  5 stacks of 
silkweed, 5 stacks of green tea leaves + 7-8 lotuses I think.  That was 
a few jade pots, raid flasks and + some mats in surplus.
Due to mistyping my main's name at the mailbox I sent it to a rogue who 
havent played since BC.  Doh!  I know I will get the mats again within 
the next 3 weeks.  But still... :)

Argh, I've done that a couple of times myself, so annoying :-) Or
autocomplete sends it to a friend instead of your alt and you feel
like an idiot asking for your stuff back lol (especially if it's
someone you haven't spoken to in ages but hadn't got round to removing
from your friendslist... embarrassing ;-))

IME, if a toon receives mail, but does not open it, at the end of 30
days it is automatically returned to the sender.

I use the mail system as an auxiliary 'bank', so this happens frequently.

I make it a point to log into my bank alts' toons every weekend.
