Usenet was much more fun 10-15 years ago. Even 2-3 years back this group was much more active, nowadays it feels nearly dead. I guess late expansion blues don't help there, a lot of regulars aren't playing WoW right now. A shame, since I hate most WoW forums, too many idiots and whiners, this place used to have by far the best discussions I could find.

At least you don't need a RedFacedTwit account to use it. A lot of ISPs , at least those around here, don't include server access anymore so I don't think many people are even aware of it or what a newsreader is. How many people even know what a DOS CLI is ? If it doesn't use a web GUI window it doesn't exists. Nobody in here but us curmudgeons :-)

Usenet was much more fun 10-15 years ago. and a lot more fun 25 years ago at 2400 bits per second, but keeping the steam modem fed with coal was a pretty dirty business > > Even 2-3 years back this group was much more active, nowadays it feels > nearly dead. I sometimes like to peruse the blizzard forums for that "fine whine", but it getting harder to find every year. Do the EU Blizzard forums have arrogant S.o.Bs as MVPs? There is this one gnome MVP that just rubs me the wrong way, but maybe it's his picture that really set me off.

A fine whine must be aged carefully, mulled, then the recipient is waterboarded in it when they least suspect. Young whines are best left on the shelf. It is their pocket universe so their rules, they say off with your head, you fade away to nothing but a grin. Thread closed by moderator. Usenet it is up to the individual and their file-de-plonk.

That newfangled thing? When I started programming, you had to know how to thread paper tape into an ASR-33 teletype. Punched cards were a move up. pt

Sheer luxury, we had to cut down trees to make the paper for our tape and it was uphill both ways to the forest :-) When the boot process involved loading the 'microcode' pinboard it was quite arcane, the machine code changed . Microcontrollers still allow that. Nowadays multicore cpus and processors are the big new thing so the marketing says. A few decades and a few trillion dollars and a few thousand times faster, but not much has changed. Just make the hamsters run faster without really advancing any concepts in programming or distributed processing. Maybe an order of magnitude but way less than several orders. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Semiconductor_SC/MP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transputer I am fascinated by the Raspberry Pi and other controllers, soon a $5 chip with linux. They are the inheritors of a long line of of things that actually run the world. Instead of games and business computers that make virtual worlds :-)

Sheer luxury. Really, seriously, THAT was :-) It just depends when you started and how near the centre of the universe you were.. It was the time of transition from hand assembled 256 bytes memory with discrete transistors to ttl chips. Sooo many bc109s (one of the transistors), so many solder connections. Getting an octal/hex display was a step up. Goodness, having a step button and a hex keypad was a step up. Address, data, deposit,Address, data, deposit,Address, data, deposit, in binary. Get some more chips, probably $200 in todays money. Address in hex, data in hex, deposit, step, sheer luxury. I started into it as a teenager working on a mine in central Australia, saving up for uni, reading magazines and ordering the parts from the US by snail mail. There wasn't much else to do apart from drink and gamble, the pay was very good , about the only thing that was. You had a job that had a table and chair, you get to sit down? sheer luxury :-) You could check out the pi and similar microcontrollers. Many devices now are pretty much single chip with a few support/interface components have a GUI and an OS. Modems, 'smart' phones (for people who know they need all the help they can get :-)
