I've been leveling a warlock, as fast as possible.

He specced for mining/engineering, but is moving too fast to
work at the professions. In mining, he's a little over 100.

Nonetheless, he dinged 85 today, and hit Pandaria.

For some reason, he's able to mine Ghost Iron.

Is this normal? I was expecting to go back and work
on tin.

Yep, they put it in as a catchup mechanic, you're probably getting
mainly ghost iron nuggets that can be combined into ore, I'd guess -
general idea is you can mine away and skill up that way, but you don't
get much ore till you reach appropriate skill lvl. Herbalism has the
same deal, not sure if skinning does though.

There was almost a cranium shaped hole in the door, thunk, thunk, thunk :-)

but it looks like they aren't ore, 1/10 of an ore.
http://www.wowhead.com/item=97512/ghost-iron-nugget#comments

You may want to go back and do that skillup now, so you get a useful
range of xp on the ghost iron and engineering skillups.

Depending on the prices you can mine->AH->buy bars for engineering.

Or mine(skillup mining)->smelt(skillup mining)->make engee(skillup
engee). about 1.5 skillups 2 per mining action.
Assuming 2-3 ore -> 1-2 ore per bar, a lot of bars per item.

You may want to look at the pandaria goggles for extra nodes, or wait
and make them yourself.

Not sure what the problem is.

I find I level much faster with questing and instances. Now at 85.6. It's just
not worth wasting time in low level areas while leveling.

They're pretty cheap. I'll get them when I decide to level the skill.

For a short time I thought I had spent unnecessary time mining on 2
alts in cata but it turns out it was more or less necessary.

I usually just run back 10 levels and scoot around without being
interrupted much.

Since you are doing this for the guild couldn't you ask for a couple
of runs of end level dungeons to top it off and gear up?

actually at 200g they are ridiculously cheap

Having just gotten into craftings with spirits I am really glad I
mistook them for being like the old wotlk instance tokens.
I just looked at
http://www.wowhead.com/item=87213/mist-piercing-goggles
eeyup, boss drop, next! grind ghost iron, good old predictable x-per
hour mining
They are a lot of work to get a slow rate even with a farm (tillers) or
farming various place, but fortunately not -only- boss grinding..

The goggles should be like the 1000g+-1500g I expected at first
200 puts the value of a spirit at less than 100g.

I would put the personal cost of a spirit of harmony at 500g+ so most of
the spirit crafts aren't worth making at the market prices I see.

On possible reason is people not counting the time, or maybe this late
possibly a lot of people have a lot of spare spirits and that would
depress the market, burning up things they see as being of little value
once the xpac comes out.
One way or another they are really dirt cheap at a few hundred , soon
to be depreciated more by the xpac, gold.

I thought I made a mistake, I was wrong in my error , or was I ?:-)

Farm is 1.6 spiritsper day, they also drop randomly, and I fairly
often get them in boxes from my weekly Celstials kill. Also well worth
doing the treasure room on Isle of Thunder, you'll get several in
there.

It depends on how much you play the character in question - on my
lesser-played characters, yep, it's a high value. On my main, I'm
drowning in the flippin' things, and they're worthless, I don't even
factor them into values of crafts :-)

Being a jewelcrafter doesn't help, there's only three things I'd use
them for, all of which are barely worth more than the cost of the gems
that also go into them... half the time I turn them into golden lotus
instead and mail those to my alchemist, more worthwhile! Yet on my lvl
85 engineer, they're naturally like gold dust, the amount of farming
it takes ton get just one skillup is insane.

It's not related to the expansion I'd say, at least, not yet - it's
been something you get tons of at max level and don't use much after
hitting max skill for ages. At least, for me - probably varies with
profession, but as my first two 90s were jewelcrafter (only uses them
a bit) and alchemist (doesn't use them at all unless I want to bypass
cd on living steel), then yeah, my experience is they aren't worth
much once you're skilled up. Only my leatherworkers want them, for
buying recipes, and once I get all recipes, they too will have no use
for them.

(Bear in mind that's the only three professions I have on lvl 90s,
rest are on 85s, but tbh, I don't find myself wanting spirits much on
those either once they're maxed out :-))

For engineer I just missed them out and ground out ghost iron down to
grey skill and maybe a very few extra mats to get through the humps to
green or better again. Even the humps usually needed ghost iron.
You CAN get skillups on grey, just not a hell of a lot, I clicked a
few too many times, and got a skillup.
It was a bit of a blur, anything that can fill that gap onhand? then
fill it right now!
It was faster. Not efficient, not the lowest gold cost but it got done
and wasn't even that expensive.

And to skillup the alchemy I...just ground out ghost iron and did
transmutes.
[ yay, transmute master at 80, I broke down and bought 3 living
steel, it was already 600 what was I going to get by waiting?
SOB trainer took them, but should get them back on procs in a short while ]

To skillup the blacksmith..oh more ghost iron.

Anything can be done with ghost iron :-), jewlcrafting need gems and
they come from..mining and prospecting ghost iron.

If I had inscription I would find a way to use ghost iron dust on thin
sheets of rolled ghost iron foil.
Enchanting, well, you can make items with ghost iron...annnnnd

the hard part is if you have to trade/sell it for other things and wait
for other people to buy/post.
Anything that can directly use it without AH wastage is like falling of
a log, many hundreds of times :-)

I'll have to look into the spirit thing. My main has been using them
for extra Golden Lotus.

I didn't really try to level engineering or mining till my lock hit 90.
I found myself needing obsidium, but about 30 point below being able to
mine it.

Curiously, mining Ghost Iron for the mining skillups has proved to be
far easier then seeking out Cobalt or adamantium. So, I'm mining 600
level ore to get mining up to 425. I'm stockpiling GI as I go.

Engineering hasn't been too much of a grind up to this point, at 425
there as well. It's a walk in the park compared to fishing.

spirits are bound, thats why skillups can be so sticky at level
above level or at 90 they come in fast if you are out and about
  enough to do the skillups

But then with the goggles and pick ghost iron is everywhere.
That and I don't think anyone much is mining on my server.
I often have 3 or 4 nodes on the map at a time and quite a few rich
nodes.
I still don't have the gather speed gloves on any gatherer.
I even got them first time on a warlock, happyhappyjoyjoy
but then realised THIS IS THE WRONG WARLOCK enchant and jewel
sadsad doh doh DOH! :-)

> I didn't really try to level engineering or mining till my lock hit 90.

gnomish army knife +10, I had a strip of them and every character has one
  gatherer gloves
engineer doesn't need as much elementium as blacksmith but uldum is
full of elementium and very easy to spot, very few guardian npcs
deepholm half and half, hyjal is mostly obsidium but sparse.
Also hyjal has more mat gatherers as people first start levelling 80s

but yeah, you can skillup on ghost iron anyway
It helped that in uldum my subsidiary miner was unmolested virtually
no competition and XP 15k a node when a quest gave 50k ( or so?)
No question,
gather mats you will need and sell well, and gather them quickly
   or quest slower.

I did have warehouse tabs full of stuff, which I prepared earlier :-)
Fishing I levelled quite a bit picking up the alchemy humps which are
mostly fish and quite profitable. But of course that wasn't a full level
just from wotlk.
You can fish pretty much anywhere, just pick what you fish. Thats
where a character microeconomy comes in. After many years you know what
is needed. The humps are by design, forcing other profs and the AH to
come into play.

Again not having a lot of competition really helps, usually nothing
but me and the crickets out there now.

I am pretty sure you get skillups from smelting ore as well.

There are pages that say so but I take long breaks then the game changes.
It may get you through a couple of humps since with other profs
needing bars it doesn't hurt to smelt a stacks even at low proc rates.

**and now the rambling commences, you can ignore the rest probably**

I am also a pretty manic gatherer so didn't really notice.
Not time-gold efficient at all.

One thing I noticed when dumping a tab of gear. One of the major AH
players bought one so I checked it out. It was a 10k transmog piece.
I have no problem, I don't want transmog so it would never have been
realised as gold in my small world. But -one- very low rate piece did
turn of for sale minutes later on one of the other major accounts.
I think maybe half the AH value is actually one player pretending to
be in competition, or a tight cartel at the least.
Prices are often way out of whack compared to undermine and I thought
it was just gouging.
The markets crash periodically, now it seems like it was for
entertainment rather than competition.

It really put me off the AH a bit but now I have a limited but
integrated microeconomy so don't really need it. But since the AH was my
prime fun and it now seems it was a virtual world within a virtual world
it has really created a hole rather than a bliss zone.

I just finshed clearing out the warehouses of everything but essentials
below 85 at about 2/3 market price. Runspeed enchant mats that sort of
thing stay.
I figure I am not going to be around much longer, the xpac will change
things again and the paid boosts -may- kill the mats market.
It is only virtual gold, I had good goldfishbowl time gathering them
anyway and will probably be back sometime.

It isn't the real money, wow is $15 a month, I pay $5 a day for
desalinated water. Just not so much fun, or fun overload, all fun-ed
out, something hollow.

Another thing to look out for is blingtrons.
Though only 1 per day per account get it on your prof leveller for the
spirits. Not spirits of harmony, fire spirits.
http://www.wowhead.com/item=74622/fire-spirit#comments
Of course it helps if you have one yourself to feed to the professions,
but not if you want engineering, chicken and egg.
If in a guild and an engineer announces drops, 4 hour cooldown, it can
make it easy.

Not so much use now you are well there but I forgot.
Not a lot of use at the lower levels of profs either way.

wowhead says the drop is 2% but that is wrong, biased by not getting
them if you have max profs

It is more like 30-50%. At least that is what I got, maybe it was buffed.
They could add up to quite a bit if you take a while to finish the profs.
Not much use for powerlevel in a day but at 3-5 levels and 2 professions
that can kick you over a hump and could be quite a few hundred gold or
similiar in time gathering mats saved aproaching 600.
They are bop and unique so you cannot stockpile.
And free, may as well use one if it is announced or just there.
All it takes is to be sure you get it with the right character each day.

It seems a waste to apply it on mining, but you get both profs so no
-loss- as such.
