Hey,

I've not played WoW for a few years now, i only own up to The Burning Crusade :D

Anyway, i have an urge to re-install and try out the new content as have a 10 day trial for Mists of Pandaria. The thing is, i'm a bit concerned with all the changes that have gone on in the past few years.

My main is an Undead Mage - current level is 71. I used to use addons from Curse which i'll have to download and install again :(

Anything major gone on in the time i've been away?

Thanks.

Wow, that's a long while gone! Well, in that case, I'd say everything
you once knew has changed, basically everything lol. Outland and
Northrend are the only zones which are much the same, and they go a
lot faster as levelling was sped up.

1-60 was completely revamped with the Cataclysm expansion, you may
find it worthwhile to roll an alt or two, see the new storyline and
get used to everything else that's changed, stats, talents, specs, are
all very different to before, you autolearn spells instead of having
to goto the trainer for them (and ranks are gone; they improve in
power with every level, automatically), playing in general has changed
quite a bit. And I'm afraid your old addons are probably dead years
ago, unless they happened to be very popular ones - with every
expansion I have to go hunting for alternatives to abandoned ones.
But, Blizzard have added functionality from a lot of the better ones
into the default interface, so you may find it works better without
addons now.

But don't be too scared off by the changes; it's a bit overwhelming at
first, but I think the game is still very fun. if anything it's more
fun than ever before if you're a more casual player who prefers to do
stuff solo instead of organised guild groups for everything; I have
tons to do at endgame now, which is a big improvement on past days,
even if I still have nostalgia for Karazhan :-)

Thanks, just reading up on the changes on the changes implemented with each expansion http://www.wowwiki.com/Level

I think you might be right about rolling an alt to get into the swing of things. I might even roll a Goblin! Brand new to me hehe

Before you start using your 10day trial and you know an active wow
player he can send you a so-called Scroll of Resurrection (and earn a
mount). Benefits:

<https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/scroll-of-resurrection-faq#q10>

"What are the benefits of sending a Scroll of Resurrection?

You will be able to claim an exclusive mount (Spectral Gryphon for
Alliance or the Spectral Wind Rider for Horde) when your invited friend
first renews their subscription and pays for 30 days of game time."

And

"What benefits are there for accepting a Scroll of Resurrection invitation?

The Scroll’s recipient can permanently boost one character to level 80
so that they can jump straight into the adventure for their 7 days of
free game time!"

So you will skip 71-80. :)

That is for your mage of course. If you decide to roll another char you
will skip everything between level 1 and 80. And if you do that I will
recommend rolling a monk. Damn fun class. :)

Yes, quite a lot. Where to start?

Specializations and talents
---------------------------
Instead of arbitrarily choosing talents from a deep tree system, you now
choose an overall specialization which largely defines your abilities,
and on top of that you customize your character by choosing from a limited
set of extra abilities (now called talents.)

For example, Warriors can choose to specialize in Arms, Fury or Protection.
Each specialization comes with a predefined set of abilities. Some
abilities (such as Hamstring and Sunder Armor) are shared by all three
specs, and some abilities are only available to one spec (i.e. only
Protection warriors can Shield Slam, and only Arms warriors can Mortal
Strike.)

Every fifteen levels, you get to customize your character a little bit by
choosing one of three related talents. For example, at level 15 Warriors
can choose to reduce the cooldown on Charge, or be able to Charge twice in
a row, or root the opponent when Charging.

Specializations also define your role for organized group content: Tank,
Healer or Damage.

Dungeon and Raid Finder
-----------------------
If you don't want to spend time sitting in trade chat looking for a group,
Blizzard added an automatic matchmaking system that assembles an
appropriate group and whisks you away directly to the dungeon.

Generally it works well and is very convenient, although some people
complain that it has eroded WoW's sense of community, because the groups
are cross-realm and thus it's likely that you will group with someone and
then never see them again.

Currency
--------
Badges of Justice have been renamed to Justice Points, and are displayed
under the Currency tab on your character screen instead of being actual items
in your bag.

Phasing
-------
In an attempt to make players feel that their actions have a permanent
effect on the world, Blizzard added Phasing, which allows areas of the
game to have a different appearance for different characters. For example
a character who has completed a series of quests to rebuild a destroyed
village will see a vibrant, healthy town, complete with an inn, merchants,
and a flight point; but a character who hasn't done those quests will see
a deserted, burned-out ghost town.

Mastery
-------
Starting at level 80 items can have a new stat: Mastery. This stat behaves
differently for all classes and specializations.

Achievements
------------
Achievements are in-game recognition for accomplishing various feats. Some
are lighthearted and silly, like getting your first haircut at a barbershop,
and others are more serious like defeating a raid boss for the first time.

Pet battles
-----------
Companion pets aren't just for show anymore; now you can train them up and
battle against other players Pokemon-style.

Transmog
--------
If you don't like the look of your armor, you can visit a Transmogrifier and
change its appearance.

Item upgrade
------------
At high levels, you can spend Justice or Valor points to improve your items.

Reforging
---------
If an item has a stat you don't like, you can visit a Reforger to reallocate
that stat into a different one.

Due to a shrinking player pool Blizzard have started merging realms. So
dont be surprised or confused if you see peeps from other realms running
around where you are. :)

Don't do the trial.
You should qualify for a scroll of resurrection.
With that you get a free lvl 80 ,upgrade to cata, and 7 days trial
that should keep you going for a while.
then mists upgrade is only $10 , or was recently.
Taking the trial kills the SOR date. ( I am pretty sure )

You will find a full installation is huge, 27 gig or so.
Try and get a copy from someone then just delete the addons and wtf
contents to make it your own.
You will also need to create a baatlenet account, once that is done and
you are at a browser anyway may as well ask on the sor forum for a scroll.

A lot has changed , actually almost EVERYTHING has changed
so I won't say much apart from
*levelling is a rocketroad..
For levelling get some of the heirlooms.
If you don't have those you can get xp gear and guild xp increase
guild exp gear for , 1k?? Also a banner that adds even more xp.
You could probably do 70-80 in a day if you tried.
1k gold is not a lot now. Ah prices have inflated.
stacks of the lvl 85 ore are 50g/20 even though you can't fly 100
metres without finding a node :-)

*mounts and some gear is account wide, glyphs are a one-time purchase.

join a lvl 25 guild and get a lot of other perks, faster travel, more
loot and profession increase, mass party res, lots more.
Doesn't have to be a lvl 25, just get one with max xp increases.

Of course you could try out a pure trial account, up to 20 (??) and it
stays there, just don't use your old account just yet.
You can play the trial up to lvl 20 (??) forever, with all the trial
restrictions.

play with a new trial , get a feel for the new play and races so it will
keep the old one dormant and reactivate that with a SOR if you want to
continue.
It will be stored as seperate account info, leave it for a year or so
and if you ever want to dual box it is there waiting maybe with another
free 80 or 90 by then:-).

Damn, already started my 10 day trial last night... rolled a Goblin Rogue and is a lot of fun so far. Main problem with WoW is the time sync involved. When i used to play i was at College/Uni now i have a 7 year old and work full time.

In regards to the scroll of resurrection, looking at this, i don't think i can use one now:

Who can receive a Scroll of Resurrection?

>>To be eligible to receive a Scroll of Resurrection, your friend must have a >>full (non-Starter Edition) World of Warcraft license that used paid game time >>in the past and was not active after March 4th, 2012. Dang.

The download was about 23gig. My 60mbit connection was the savior, only took an hour :)

oh well but with the xp increase and all the xp gear and guild xp
it takes little time to go 1-85.
85-90 is a bit longer when xp slows down and you are getting into levels
and mobs tuned for current high level not just generically nerfed.

You can also level in dungeons or battlegrounds, you even get a lot of
xp picking flowers, same as a mob kill, may as well level gathering on
the way if you don't have them all.
Some of the low level mats go for quite a lot and can finance your prof
levelling, of course some don't.
It could be worth taking skinning at least, extra cash and crit no xp,
mining and herbs give cash and xp as well. Probably no xp for skinning
because it takes no extra effort and you could just get a 90 to
annihilate a whole zone.

Little time -IF- you are hell bent on just levelling instead of having
fun and -IF- you know the time-wasting quests.

Someone in the guild did 1-90 in 4 days, calling in the odd airstrike
from 90s to clear the way and they knew the quests.

Sometimes the phasing makes it difficult and depending on server pop
there still aren't many people you can group with.
Thats in general low numbers, plus the phasing takes them out of your
questline.

People seem surprised to be offered a group.

Most of what used to be 3person elites are now soloable.
Just the odd one when you expect the easy road and it isn't get you killed.
Also because mobs 5 levels up are dropping gear your level there is a
small supply of AH gear if you have too many slots 10 levels low because
of the rapid levelling, not usually a problem except for melee.
You could always pop into dungeon finder on the way to get level gear.

I leveled 4 chars 80-85 in a week without much xp gear, just the guild
stuff, while doing professions since the mats were coming in, and a day
with pokemon, and lot of AH time clearing out 10 tabs of old junk,
a few bankers got levelled to 10, and I tried a few other races and
classes up to 20 or so. A pretty full week but not just top level
grinding. A LOT but not all.

It is also pretty mind bendingly boring even though I am pretty
incompetent with 2 buttons to push
Only a few deaths, mostly from pressing the wrong buttons, forgetting
the warlock attack from range button with voidlord is pretty lethal if
you happen to be playing a warrior, stepping off mountains, finding
where the killer elites live, that sort of thing.

One of my guildies leveled a shammy from 1 to 54 in 9-10 hours (from 8am
to raid time at 8pm same night) just by healing in dungeons. My dps
shammy went from 29 to 46 in 3 hours by rumbling in dungeons and doing
quests in the waiting time while I was queued foranother dungeon yesterday.
