Anyone tried Hearthstone yet? Seems a new beta wave went out the last
day or so as I got an invite yesterday. Had a shot tonight and hmm,
quite fun - I felt a bit lost at first but the initial games give some
idea what to do (only some, you have to apply your brain to work it
out but the clues are there!), and I'm coming to understand it a
little better now.

In some ways it reminds me of petbattles: turnbased, have to come up
with moves to counter the opponent, pretty fun, although rather random
- if you don't draw the cards you need and your opponent does, well
tough luck lol. No idea how much I'll play it but it seems a pretty
fun thing to pick up for a few minutes here and there at least.
Hopefully the matchmaking system will always work well enough for
hopeless people like me to not lose *every* game!

I'd love to, but alas no invite yet. Maybe in the next wave.

I used to play MtG back in the days and from what I saw, it looks like an
interesting mix of MtG and Pet Battles.

Cheers

Haven't played / tried it yet, but it seems like from a glance it's
along the pokemon or Magic the gathering card games...Is this only for
the PC at this point?

Bliz would be extremely wise to get this as a app for android / iphones
if not in plans already, as I see this as something to do when away from
the PC. IMO, If my head is in warcraft mode and I'm at the PC, I'm
going to play WoW. If I'm at lunch or break at work, and away from the
PC, I may play this.

They also would be smart to make it F2P app to all, with better cards or
features available to those who already have accounts with blizz. Might
be a way to draw in more ($$) for them from people who will play the
card game who never touched WoW before.... Kinda a new market.

On a side note, right now I play Castle Clash on my android tablet as my
relaxing game when away from the PC. Anyone else try it? Kind of
reminds me a bit of the old warcraft 1-3, where you build town hall,
bases, towers, walls, gold mines, mana mills, etc and can upgrade them
the way you could in Warcraft. You can raid other players, run dungeons
in where it's strategy of placing your types of troops and hero class as
you don't have direct control over them. Quite addicting little game
and recommend checking it out... :)

Shame, hope you get in next wave then!

I've never played any game like this so it's totally new to me, I like
that it's fairly easy to figure the basics out, but I think it'll take
more experience to get much good at it. Think I have a win ratio of
about 1 in 4 lol... better than none but I'm not very good so far ;-)

At present, yep, but at least one of the Blizz devs has it on his iPad
apprently, so I guess that'll follow soon! Kinda hoping Android
follows, my bf has an Android tablet he doesn't use much, so I borrow
it occasionally, it seems the kind of game that'd go well on a tablet.

Yeah, agreed. Although despite the Warcraft theme, it's not much like
WoW so handy if you're in the mood for a different type of game. I'm
hoping/dreaming they'll put it ingame as a minigame - there's NPCs
playing it in the shrines and suchlike now, so it'd be pretty cool if
you could sit down at a table and hav a window come up! Doubt it'd
happen tbh, but it'd be cool if it did :-)

I believe it will be free to play from what I heard - only cost is if
you want to buy extra cards. You can earn ingame gold to buy decks, so
spending money isn't compulsory, but you can speed it up by buying
them for real money - in beta, you get a legendary card for your first
purchase so I took the cheapest option: £1.99 for 2 decks. I don't
normally do ingame purchases as if I get in the habit, costs will
stack up pretty fast, but a calculated one-off suits me.

Haven't come across it but I may take a look. There seem to be quite a
few empire-building type games out there, I play Avalon Wars a lot,
sadly people willing to spend real money get a pretty big advantage
there but you can still be fairly decent at it if you don't, just have
to accept you'll always get beaten by those who've got big wallets.

Is it gonna have "loot cards" like the recently discontinued
physical card game did?

Good question! I haven't seen any yet, but then it's only in beta, who
knows what they may add when it goes live. At present all cards that
I've seen, are just ingame playing cards, but it wouldn't surprise me
if they did add a loot card or two, would be a fun tie-in for people
who play both.

Pretty addictive game, I'm finding now - whenever I sit down for just
a couple of games, that turns into a few hours... :-P I'm not very
good at it but even I win enough to keep my interest up, and the odd
game where the cards fall perfectly is very satisfying indeed,
sometimes it's just plain funny how fast you can take someone down, if
you get a good combination of cards :-)

Yay, I got my beta invite last night. Downloaded and installed it right away
and then started it up for a "quick look". Next thing I new it was almost
four hours later and my wife on her way from bed to the toilet and back
discretly asked if I hadn't mentioned something about an early night ;-)

I beat the first five tutorial characters with large margins and even
managed to beat Illidan (though that was by the narrowest of margins) so I
figured it was pretty eaasy. Created a custom deck and proceeded to practise
mode to "quickly" unlock the other classes ;-) After I'd had my behind
handed to me by Rexxor the hunter half a dozen times I decided to try using
a basic deck but got beat badly again several times. Had a go agains Guldan
and beat him easily on my first attempt. I then lost against Thrall a few
times and lost twice against Anduin.

I then had a go at Play mode. In the first game I was beaten soundly, then I
beat a Pally by a rather large margin and a mage by the narrowest of margins
before losing to a priest.

At that time I was called to bed by the powers that lurk :-)

Anyway, it's an easy enough game to grasp the basics but I guess like with
Magic the Gathering the secret will be with deck building if you want to be
really good. In any case, it's another cool game by Blizzard that appeals to
my completist streak (unlock all classes, level each up to level 10 (or
isn't that the cap?), collect all basic decks etc... Unlike WoW it's
something that can easily be played for just fifteen minutes or so, which
suits my real life situation better.

I'll certainly keep playing the beta.

Does anyone know if there is the possibility to play against specific
players (say against someone who is on the friends list)?

Cheers

Yay! And lol, that's been my experience at times too, "just one more

Hehe Rexxar can be a pain, yeah - if you don't have AOE to counter the
million minions he put up, it's tricky! Mage is a decent class for
that though, I love planting a Kobold Geomancer (spelldmg +1) followed
by Arcane Explosion (1 dmg aoe, increased to 2 by the Geomancer) for a
cheap nuke, else Flamestrike (4 dmg, buffed to 5 by Geomancer) to
really annoy someone who lined up several big minions :-)

Hehe. I've played 4 of the classes now and tend to get beat a fair
bit, but I'm improving anyway. Playing other players is pretty fun,
although matchmaking varies wildly; sometimes I get steamrollered,
other times I seem to dominate. Then occasionally I get a really
really close game, I love those as you know you got a good match that
time.

>Anyway, it's an easy enough game to grasp the basics but I guess like with

Yeah, I think so, although luck also plays a part - often the card
that'd be perfect to solve a situation I'm in, isn't in my hand lol.
My decks probably aren't the greatest, given my lack of experience of
this type of game, but they're fairly decent for the level I'm at. The
hardest thing is the card limit, as I'm always finding myself wanting
to use more cards than I can fit into a deck!

>In any case, it's another cool game by Blizzard that appeals to

Cap is 60 ;-) 10 just unlocks the basic cards, after that it's
cosmetic really, you get upgraded versions of each card as you level;
same abilities but fancier graphics, so no big deal. Reaching 20-ish
is fairly fast; I've got mage and paladin that far anyway, but I think
it takes a fair bit longer to reach the top.

You can also try collecting all non-basic cards, you can buy decks for
100g each, else enter the arena for 150g and have a decent chance at
winning a few decks, plus disenchanting extra cards and crafting
missing ones helps. Arena is really fun, you get to select a deck from
a random choice of cards it gives you (it puts up 3, you pick 1, and
it does that for all 30 cards), meaning you can try out some cards you
may not have yet. I've only tried that twice so far but it's fun and
I'm about even on wins and losses, so good enough!

I *think* it may be possible to challenge a Battle.net friend who is
online, but I don't know for sure, as none of my friends are in the
beta.

I'll certainly try again, but yesterday just didn't get the right cards (or
didn't have the right deck :-)

> The hardest thing is the card limit, as I'm always finding myself wanting

Yeah. Actually, I'm glad for the card limit, because this at least tempers
my drive to put every card in it :-) Getting a ~1/30 (or for some cards 2/30)
chance of seeing the card reasonably soon is beter than a 1/100 chance :-)

Thanks. I'll keep playing my mage for a while to try to get a better grasp
but I'll certainly have a go at the other classes as well.

Yes, I got one of those (bought it with my 100g reward for playing 3 games
against human opponents).

Is 150g the entry fee or the reward for arena? Haven't tried that yet as it
is still greyed out (maybe because I've not had 150g yet?).

> plus disenchanting extra cards and crafting missing ones helps.

I saw that briefly but haven't looked at it yet. Can you only craft "real"
cards that you don't have yet or do you have free reign to put together
cards as you like (with limits and appropriate cost I guess)?

That does sound like fun. I'll give it a go when I next have time.

Cheers

It may be that the "direct duel" feature is still missing but I believe that
battle.net is integrated, at least the game shows my three real-id friends
back from the WoW days.

I've tried limiting my WoW time enough times to know that even with today's
scenarios and quests I would probably not be able to stop after 15 minutes
;-)

I know that feeling well. Taunt cards and ways to deal with adds are
both pretty useful to have a few of, I've found, but in the end it
just taked playing around to find what suits you (and still losing a
lot :-P)

Mage is my main class as well, though I've done a bit with paladin and
warlock and begin at a basic level on hunter.

That's a handy reward, once you run out of those you'll be down to
running dailies for gold lol. Luckily it's one per day so not too much
grind (and they'll carry over; don't log in for 3 days and you get
given 3 at one time, so not much pressure to play constantly). You get
40 gold per daily, and 10 per 3 games won in Play mode, so not super
fast, but fast enough for a new deck every 2-3 days.

Your first time is free, so I guess you maybe have to unlock all
classes or something like that to unlock the arena. Not sure exactly,
since I didn't try it for the first week or so!

Only pre-determined cards, it lets you browse the full catalogue and
you can pick out which you'd like. The rarer ones are crazy expensive
but you can craft some useful ones quite cheaply, which is pretty

Worth leaving yourself an hour or so for it I'd say - you don't
actually have to play all your arena games at once but I find once
I've played one, I want to keep going ;-)

Ok, you'll get no argument from me. I'm sure it had been possible even back
in vanilla (though maybe not as easy as it is now).

Blizzard's luck is that there are plenty of people like you and me ;-)

Oh, I didn't say you could do *everything* in 15 minutes. But there
certainly were *some* things to do in 15 minutes (though probably not in the
endgame). However, levelling up a character, you could log out in your local
inn and when you came back it would have been possible to do a few quests
close to the inn, hand them inn and log back out again.

Granted, you would need longer bits from time to time, to follow bread crumb
quests to other zones or those annoying travel from one end of the zone to
the other (less than fond memories of STV and Felwood linger somewhere in my
memory).

I rarely did instances before joining my guild, having been 60 for quite
some time. There were a lot of instances I had never set foot in until I had
outgrown them to a degree that I could solo them :-)

The extra flightpaths they added in Cata were one of the best
quality-of-life improvements ever. Questing in northern STV as
Alliance in vanilla: So, is it quicker to fly to Sentinel Hill,
Darkshire or Booty Bay? Either way you've got a 10 minute walk to your
destination afterwards. I usually picked Darkshire and checked the
cave nearby for the rare spider, made some money off selling her
unique drops but still, ugh :-P

I did a fair number on my first character, it was enough hassle that I
rarely did them since. You could easily spend 3-4 hours in some of
them (and I'm talking the likes of Wailing Caverns/Maraudon, not BRD
which you simply couldn't do the whole of unless you were 60!), oof.
They've made the game a lot more friendly to people with limited time,
that's for sure.

Or the Stitches quests and other painful chains, back and forth, back and
forth,
back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and
forth,
before riding.
Not
another
&^%$
item
I was *&^%% just ^%$%%$ over &^$ %#%^ there
just %$%^ give me a ^%^^ @!#$%& ^$$^%#$ shopping &^&^ list for *&^%^& sake!

A lot of those quests were absolute pains without riding, but probably
moreso because on a first character I thought that they may actually matter
later on.

All pretty much nuked now, although in retrospect they did serve to make it
seem epic.
There are quiet a few other quests that see you travelling the length of the
continent(s) again and again and a ^%^% again.
After about level 40-50 , at the old slow levelling rate, I finally twigged
that they
just
don't
matter.
Then most stuff could be done in 15 minutes, if not they were triaged.

But still, those first 40 levels on a first slow character really made you
feel the pain, I remember them better than any of the blur on any MMO
since.
Thats kinda what I am looking for on a new game. A nice bit of masochism in
smallish doses :-)
It is a dichotomy, we want cheap easy epics, but then they aren't really
epics
and if they are epics what do you get after a short time drooling over the
new precious?
..a quest for a more epic epic .

Now I mostly stroll around and enjoy the scenery while trying not to be
ganked by the Ubers claiming their bit of the shifting sandpile.
There is a lot to see and do within 15 minutes if you take the time to pick
10 roses :-)

I received an invite to the beta last night, let's just say I'm finding the starting levels very, very painful.

Hopefully you'll figure it out some more over time - I found them
mixed, some I got through first time, others took a few tries, but I
got there in the end. I'm 100% new to this kind of game, finding it
very fun trying to come up with strategies, but not always doing well;
I thought I was improving until last night, when I lost all but one of
about 10 games, one of those nights I guess!

My best tip: at the start of a game when it lets you choose your
cards; if there's no 1-2 mana cards, get rid of all the high mana ones
in the hope of getting something you can actually use early on.

Also be aware if you use a minion to attack another minion, they both
deal damage to each other, so don't suicide your good minions if a
smaller one will suffice. That 3 attack 1 health minion the opponent
has can be just as easily killed by suiciding your 1 attack 1 health
murloc as by your big powerful 5 attack 3 health minion (who will also
die!). Think that was the concept that took me longest to figure out
at first, once I twigged that, it got much less painful.
