a different content then the alliance alone or the horde alone auction 
house. Most people only use it for transfering items to their other 
faction toons.

Yep, it's usually got 1-2 pages of items in total, most of which are
pets only available from one faction's vendors. Better to travel to
the regular AH if you want to sell normal things like cloth.

There were also some problems with the AH after the patch.
Though I think that was the mobile AH there may have been some other AH 
effects.

Are you aware of banker alts?
Just position a lowby char in a major city near an AH/mailbox and mail 
everything auctionable to them.
Saves a lot of running back and forth to capital AHs.
Also useful for storage in their bank during market lows , storing 
profession mats,  shopping for mats, storing items you snapped up cheap. 
Give them a guild and then a guildbank and they are useful warehouses.

The 3 neutral AHs , all linked, also take a 15% cut.
Few people use them, so few people look at them.
They may have the zone specific hand-in quest items dumped there just for 
convenience but most chars are alts on the rocket road and they outlevel 
zones faster than the old grind chains are completed.
The only real use is cross faction trading Harde<->Alliance, e,g, 1 ore for 
10000g if someone wants to move cash to the other side and doesn't mind the 
cut.
Those figures used to mess with AH price database but most now ignore 
outliers and segment the 3 AHs.

Beware if you put something up cheap for transfer, sniping bots can grab it 
and Bliz do not consider it stealing/cheating.
No recovery, you put it up and you lost it, bad luck.

You can't trade between the same account chars. You need trusted friends or 
multiple accounts to cross-faction trade.

For large cash and item moves without the huge cut you can apparently 
accumulate items/gold with a lowby pandaren mule before faction is set.
I haven't tried the pandaren ***and all this is stale info***, google it if 
you dare to care :-)

I've also been problem with the AH on both Alliance and Horde AH.  If I look for anything, it takes a long ass time and nothing shows so it seems to be all AH's.  I don't know if this is on all servers but I know for sure it's happening on Earthen Ring, Azjol-Nerub and Anvilmar.

I have to correct myself, it seems my problem was with the auctioneer add-on which was supposed to have been updated but caused problems.  I took it out and the problem was solved.
