"start button" greyed out, multiplayer Warcraft2

For the life of me I can't work out how to connect 2 computers in direct
connection!Basic setup is PC #1 with CD trying to connect to PC #2 which is
laptop (without CD available).

Starting with the "Select connection method" screen we select "Direct" and
then "Connect"

Set the baud to 9600, Call on PC (Answer on laptop), Com1 irq4 and then
select "Connect".

We then get to the "multiplayer screen" on the PC.
Regardless of number of players, scenario or option the "Start Game" button
remains greyed. The laptop is sitting there with "Waiting for reply" by now.

* What are the preconditions for the "Start Game" button to be red? *

OTHER NOTES
1	The serial cable was used to transfer the WAR2 directory to the
laptop using Interlink so I assume it's working OK. We used COM1 on both
computers during the transfer and try using COM1 for WC2.
2	The game runs ok singleplayer on the PC but this can't be checked on
the laptop due to lack of CD-ROM
3	The PC's modem was removed and COM1 and COM2 (mouse) run off the
standard IO card.

Help would be greated appreciated.

For two player you need one to select Create Game and one Join Game. The one
who selected Create Game can then choose all the options. However, the one who
selected Join Game has to click on the box next to their name on the list to
get an X into it to say they've joined. Only at this point can you start a
game.

Hope this helps,

One of the players probably needs to click the checkbox next to his name
on the left side of the screen.

I got it working. It seemed to be lack of memory on the laptop. I never saw
the screen with the red button on the laptop!!Fix was to drop smartdrive down
to 1 Meg to free up memory. I had to do this to get the sound working on the
PC with the CD ROM as well. 8 MEG's RAM is *NOT* enough if you have
SoundBlaster Pro with the usual settings for smartdrive.

The solution is very simple. It took a long time for my friend and I
to figure this out.

It sounds like you have no problems connecting which is very good.

Try this to "ungrey" the start button.

At the top left of the screen are the two players names. (when
connected)
My friend (who was the one being called) checked or clicked on the box
beside his name.
An "X" appeared on top of the box, and we were able to start the game.

Just tell whoever you are calling to click on the box beside their
name.

I think when the start button is grey it means that both players are
allies or something. Anyway if you have any more problems just e-mail
me.

Happy Hunting!!!
I hope this helps!!!

Ummmm all you need to do is get the 'non host' to click on the little red box
next to his name... this should put a cross in the box and the computer knows
he is in...

My friend and i had that problem. it is easy to solve. Just make sure that
if the person has a Square Box by there name in the setup screen, they must
check it.
