Do the secondary skills do much for you? Can they make you any money?

My main is a priest, so I can typicaly heal myself, so making things
to eat (cooking), eating fish (fishing) and applying bandages (first
aid) don't seem to help me much. Should I even be spending time in
these?

And as a side note, for those of you who will suggest first aid for
the bandages so I don't need to use mana to heal, I'm tailoring/
enchanting, so all the cloth I get typically goes to that. Even if I'm
making items that don't level my tailoring I still DE them so thats
where my cloth goes.

Thoughts?

First Aid is *definitely* worth skilling up. High-level Fishing can make
good money, but it takes a lot of effort and patience to get there.
Cooking can make some foods that give decent buffs.

Bandages are still useful for a healing class. In a tough fight, you can
fear the mob and bandage yourself while it's running around, saving mana
for nukes or extra heals.

Fishing really only serves to support other professions. If you can
do without the reagents, then I wouldn't bother leveling it (that
being said, Fishing is dirt-easy/cheap, albeit time consuming, to
level).

Cooking on the other hand, as another poster pointed out, can give
some very, very good buffs at higher levels. I never leave home with
Basilisk on my mage or fish sticks on my druid :).

First aid is also useful in long boss fights. If you have time to
bandage yourself (or even another player), then you can do that to a)
save mana, but also b) take you out of casting state. If you can use
a bandage and get 2 or 3 full ticks of mana back in the process you
saved yourself 1 heal, and bought another one from the extra ticks you
picked up. It's certainly not gonna hurt to level it :).

Do first aid anyway. It might take some money to buy cloth since you
are also a tailor, but its great for situations when you are out of
mana or need to conserve mana somehow.

Fishin can make you money at higher levels but it takes a long time to
skill up. If you're horde, make sure you go to hinterlands around
level 50 to get the fishing pole quest. If you're alliance you can
either try to win the fishing contest in STV or do a quest from
Shattrath that gives you another good fishing pole. The good thing
about fishing is you don't need to be in a specific zone to gain
skillups. You can still gain skillups fishing in the starting zones.
The difference is you won't catch good fish that can be sold for
money. The way skillups work in fishin is that the number of fish
caught to increase your skill becomes greater as you increase in
skill.

Cooking doesn't directly contribute to your income, but rather saves
you money from buying food. Again, food can be used to save on mana,
requiring you to need less water to regain mana, instead of healing
yourself then drinking. Food can also give buffs, and the Outland
food buffs are better than the old world buff. Most old world buffs
give stamina of some sort. Outland food buffs can give all sorts of
other buffs, like strength and spell damage. Any buff is always a
bonus, and leveling cooking is easy as most of the mats for cooking
come from the mobs you kill.

In the end it won't hurt you much to not level these skills, but
having them can give you some advantages. If you have the time, level
fishing for the money. If you do level first aid, level it to 360, at
which point you can learn heavy netherweave bandage. Its not
important to get first aid to 375, as there is nothing new to learn
after 360. This way you can make the best bandages in the game
without investing the cloth to get to the max skill. Cooking is the
easiest to level since you'll always be gathering mats for it, and any
mats that don't drop can usually be bought from a vendor in a town
cheap. Even if you don't want the food for healing, make the food for
buffs.

All I can say about first aid is even though I thought it was useless
for me as a healing class, I heard some people talking about it so I
leveled it up, and man is it useful! Yes, you lose some money, but it
can be worth it depending on how you play. But if you are getting along
fine without it, don't bother. I actually haven't leveled it up yet with
my druid, and I sell mageweave for 3.5g a stack.

Cooking I find useless. Even the buffs don't seem worth the effort, at
least not for solo playing where you can just control the situation on
your own anyway.

Fishing is a huge chore. I do it every now and then, but you don't need
to really focus on it. I've never caught anything worth much yet, but my
fishing has never gone over 250 yet on any character.

Furthermore, these things can take away time from simply leveling up, so
consider that too. :)

First Aid is a must for almost any character and it's so easy to level
it's rediculous. I keep 20 Heavy Nether bandages on me at all times
and sell the rest of the cloth.

Fishing can be profitable (I caught a trunk with Mythiril Shield Spike
recipe that I sold for 45g and that was at 140 fishing skill). It
also provides fish to level up your cooking skill almost effortlessly
if you level it as you level. Sit and chat in town during your down
time and fish in the ponds in town.

Cooking is a huge pain in the ass to level if you don't have easy fish
to do it with or big bags to hold all the stuff. But the buffs are
very nice once you hit Outland. A free +20 Stamina and +20 Other stat
that stacks with your priests buffs is NOT a bad thing. :)

At L41 I need to finish the cooking quest from Gadgetzan (my next stop after
Stranglethorn) so the best recipe I can make is the sagefish one that gives
health + mana + stamina. I didn't realize that cooking would return better
and better and better buffs. (I should have.) I'd only heard that it made
sense to improve cooking skills if one is a hunter as cooked bear meat (for
instance) makes a pet happy at higher levels than plain bear meat.

Fishing can make good money, either on its own or combined with cooking.
Components for certain potions (eg stonescale eel), or mana food sells very
well)

The caveat is that it takes time to catch the fish, and you can probably
make similar money plenty of other ways.

I disagree. I leveled up fishing, and used it along with my alchemy to get
my epic mount. Fishing in STV for 'floating wreckage' gets you trunks that
have greens, cloth, money and other stuff in them. I was making about 50-75
gold per day doing this, fishing about 2-3 hours a day. Gets boring, but
farming has never bothered me. I do agree that combining it with other
skills makes it more valuable. Stonescale Eels were great catches because I
would make stonescale oil with my alchy.. and for some reason, on my
server, I was the only one doing this, and they were selling for big money.
Didn't take me long at all to get my epic mount. And now, at even higher
levels, you can fish some good stuff out, like motes of water, which 10
combined together get you around 20 gold on my server. Not to mention the
blues that you can somtimes fish up anywhere. I also entered the STV
contest several times and won twice so I could get the pole and the hook
trinket, as well as the other 3 special fish that you turn in for gear (hat,
boots and a fishing line enchant). Fishing can be useful and fun...

There is definate money to be made here. It used to be that noone cared
about it, but more and more, people are realizing that some of the food
buffs are pretty good... so learning the higher recipes is a good thing,
and certain ones can sell quickly.

Agreed. This is useful for EVERYONE, even healers. More than once I have
been the main healer, out of mana, and ran up to put a bandage on someone
that needed it because it was the only thing left I had.. It's free health
in a fight.. never hurts to have it.

Sometimes fishing is more than worth it for the time invested. 2
weeks ago my level 24 warrior fished in Booty Bay for 2 hours and
ended up with enough items to put on the AH to make 15g by the next
day. Far more than I could make mining or skinning in 1 day.

All my chars get leveled up in fishing as soon as possible. It's
easier on the Alliance side, as there are several fishing quests in
Darkshore and in Lakeshire, but my Hordies take it up as well. They
just don't get all those quest XPs along with the leveling in fishing.

First Aid is handy for all classes. Fishing is easier now more than
ever, and is a great source of water motes in Outland, plus the fish
that go into Cooking recipes. Cooking has gotten a big boost since
TBC, and there are now several buff foods that worth the trouble to be
able to make.

Emphatic yes to the first question. Tentative no to the second, because
it is not my impression that there's any market in the AH for functional
foods.

Look more closely at the foods. You'll then find that some of them are
*functional*.

I still will suggest first aid for ALL classes, and ESPECIALLY the healing
classes. A bandage (depending on the level) takes the same time to apply as
casting a large heal. If you are low on mana, and can bandage yourself or
someone else not taking aggro, you extend your healing capabilities. That
is, of course, assuming your main wish in levelling a priest is to heal. It
doesn't take much cloth to level, really, especially if you work on it while
questing. It can save pack space as well. Got a couple stacks of silk? Make
heavy silk bandages, and use them as you run an instance.

Fishing and cooking go hand in hand. It is easiest to level both after you
have a mount. But, you can level fishing in ANY body of water you can catch
fish in - meaning that even if the fish is low level, you can still level up
your skill by catching. So, if you are waiting for party members to arrive
and you are near the water, go ahead and cast a line or two.

Now that you are limited to only one 'guardian' elixir and one 'battle'
elixir, food buffs are looking really nice. Being able to cook can earn you
cash, I suppose, but mostly it will help you in battle.

Just taken the time to level first aid to 375 on my shadow priest. It
is very mana expensive to drop shadow, heal and reply shadowform.
Often found I couldn't reply shadowform. Better to bandage yourself.
