OTOH, there are theories which fit the existing facts well, and there are theories that don't. As you say, a theory isn't the ultimate truth of the universe; the facts which the theory explains are. When a new theory is proposed, it must explain all of the facts that the old theory explained before it is considered to be as good; so any theory proposed as a replacement to Special Relativity must explain why objects moving at speeds comparable to that of light are more massive and longer-lasting - both experimental facts.
