Actually Timothy what you are referring to is more an explanation of theoretical "hyperspace" than it is "warp theory" from Star Trek. Warp theory is in fact about actually ftl travel. The hypothetical warp field gives the appearance of lowered mass within a warp field. By staying within the field of "real" time by using the warp drive travelers in the Star Trek universe avoid troublesome relativistic complications of time dilation. The use of impulse drive at high output, however, exposes them to these dilation effects because it is a relatively simple reaction drive driven by fusion reactors that do not isolate the vessel in the often mentioned "warp bubble" (in the case of large Federation starships at any rate). The "twisted geometry" you are referring to, I think has more to do with the space-time curvature part of the General Relativity Theory (which was demonstrated early in this century) than it does the "space warps" you refer to at the end of your commentary.
