Ouch, that'd drive me mad, maybe worth disabling some addons to see if
one of them's overruling you and forcing them to stay on somehow? If
you can narrow it down then you might be able to find the setting
that's broken it.  Things like AdvancedInterfaceOptions can interact
with them, as well as regular nameplate addons, maybe one of them is
breaking it :-/ 

Mine certainly works as normal, I've just been toggling friendly
nameplates to confirm my suspicion that the script I posted for
positioning needs to be run per character, not per account, that's
going to be annoying! At least it does persist through logout; once
it's done it's done for good.
