Back when I still played I had similar issues but only in raids. In the
world and in 5-man instances everything was fine. However, in raids my fps
would drop to very low levels and after every boss kill my client would
freeze for between 20 to 40 seconds.

With some trial and error I figured out it must have been addon related (I
used to have *lots* of those), probably something to do with many eventy
being triggered by the bosskill which then all my addons needed to handle.
Disabling all non-vital addons before joining raids helped some (the low
fps persisted, that was probably due to my old machine and the many people
to be rendered) but the boss kill freezes were gone after that. The only
nuissance was having to log off to switch between my two addon profiles
before joining a raid...

Don't know how many addons you have and if they have anything to do with
your issues but it might be worth looking into.

Cheers
