First off, gold seems much less useful than it was an expansion or two ago;
Blizz apparently moved to non-transferable currencies to kill off the gold
traders, with considerable success.

My main uses for gold is for buying gems and enchants, and the occasional
crafted epic. Repairs on my pally simply aren't that expensive.

My main is a alchemist/herbalist, but he barely herbs anymore. He's maxxed
farming, and planting Enigma Seeds each day gives plenty of herbs, including
Golden Lotus. He makes flasks, and sells those, for a modest 1000-2000g a 
week, which is usually plenty, when the income from dailies is added in.
