If you talk about ordinary 502 non-tier gear from LFRs you should go for 522 gear all the way where possible. Get your 502s from LFRs, but save your VPs for the 522 gear + upgrades for those. The difference is huge because the output (healing, dps, whatever) scales logarithmic with raid buffs. BUT! You also have to do Nalak every week.
