The big secret about raiding is that your guild is only as good as
your dps.

Lets just say that your guild is having a problem healing, in that
your current progression boss runs your healers out of mana at the 20%
mark (ie, boss only has 20% health left). In a bad guild, the response
is that it's a healing issue. Either the healers are undergeared, or
someone is taking too much damage, or the positioning is bad, causing
too much splash damage, etc.

In a good guild, the response is, "You dps players, get off your lazy
ass and do 25% more dps", which is followed up by singling out the
slackers. For example, if you have 3 mages in 2nd, 4th, and 9th place
on recount, that 9th place mage will get picked on, because he should
be in the top 5.

The reason most guilds do poorly is because their dps players have
never learned how to dps. This is quite unlike tanks and healers, who
generally are forced to learn the basics of tanking and healing during
random 5 mans.
