After bombing the Schmitz Infantry in Uldum last night (yay, only 5 days to
go) _NPCScan notified me of a rare scorpion and suggested I tame it. As I'm
quite happy with my (not so) juvenile snow leopard, I decided to kill him
for the loot instead. All it dropped was a grey item, looking like a blue
gem. Its tooltip said something along the lines of "The desire to serve as a
trusty, loyal pet condensed into this thingamajig". Boy, did I feel guilty!

I seem to recall that those sources propagating the "spawn on the hour"
theory also mentioned that there are at most 4 rares active per continent
(at least in Outland, not sure about Northrend). So if you're lucky, you can
kill 4 rares within 60 minutes at most, then have to wait for new respawns.
If you just kill some of them, the corresponding number of new spawns will
take palce but the unkilled ones remain alive. There doesn't seem to be a
despawn mechanism. If nobody kills any of the rares, the same four will
wander around in eternity (or until the next server restart). At least that
is how I understood it. Could well be wrong though, but so far it seemed to
match my experience.

Cheers
