How do go down a ladder without falling?

Okay folks, this is really hindering my enjoyment of what would
otherwise be a very enjoyable game.

When I get to the top of a ladder and wish to go down it, I either
bounce off it, or fall to the bottom. Can someone provide a hint on
how to actually -get ON- a ladder from above. This is MOST
frustrating.

go towards it backwards slowly until you connect with it
