Advanced Settings problem in Unreal I

Hi all,
I got a wierd problem when I try to access the Advanced Setting choice 
in the Unreal 1 options menu.  Upon choosing the Advanced Settings 
choice, a smaller version of Unreal's option menu appears and the 
advanced settings window appears but is rapidly flashing and is 
inaccessible.  The smaller copy of Unreal's menu that pops up even 
becomes the active menu screen, and the original menu screen becomes 
inactive and inaccessible.   If i hit esc, the mouse pointer appears but 
since the AO window is flashing, I cant do anything in it, and the 2nd 
smaller options menu covers most of it anyway.  I can exit the smaller 
version of the menu, but then Unreal exits completely.
It looks like selecting the advanced options runs a second, smaller 
"copy" of the options menu over the top of the AO window, but I cant do 
anything in the AO window.  Any hints?
